AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Sections
203, 205 and 206 of Article 19 of the Code of Public Local
Laws of Maryland (1930 Edition), title "St. Mary's County",
sub-title "Sheriff", relating to the compensation and expenses
of the Sheriff of St. Mary's County and his deputies and
providing for the disposition of fines and costs collected by
him.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Sections 203, 205 and 206 of Article 19 of the Code
of Public Local Laws of Maryland (1930 Edition), title "St.
Mary's County", sub-title "Sheriff", be and they are hereby
repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:
203. The Sheriff of St. Mary's County shall receive for
keeping each prisoner committed to his custody, and for pro-
viding victuals and fire for each prisoner the sum of seventy-
five cents per day. The said sheriff is hereby required under a
penalty of one hundred dollars to keep a book at his office, or at
the county jail, in which he shall keep a record of the names,
ages and dates when received, the offense charged, the date of
discharge and the reason thereof, of all persons committed to
his custody, which book shall be open to inspection by all per-
sons interested.
205. (a) The Sheriff of St. Mary's County shall receive an
annual salary of Three Thousand Dollars ($3, 000. 00), to be
paid to him in monthly instalments by the County Commis-
sioners of St. Mary's County, and such sum as may be necessary
for the operation of his automobile in the performance of the
duties of his office, including expenses for telephone, telegraph,
stationery and other incidental expenses of his office.
(b) He is hereby authorized to appoint two deputies at an
annual compensation of Fifteen Hundred Dollars ($1, 500. 00)
each, which shall be paid in monthly instalments by the said
County Commissioners. The said Sheriff may also appoint a
deputy sheriff at Leonardtown, provided the said town will
make provision for paying said deputy sheriff the sum of One
Thousand Dollars ($1, 000. 00) per year, in which case the
County Commissioners shall pay such deputy Five Hundred
Dollars ($500. 00) per year, payable in monthly instalments.
The said Sheriff and deputies shall be paid no other compen-
sation whatsoever for performing the duties of their offices,
other than mileage for the use of their automobile or automo-
