WHEREAS, it is essential to the interests not only of the
persons living and owning property in the vicinity of this road,
and to the citizens of Baltimore, Howard and Prince George's
County through which counties this road passes that said road
be improved, widened and thoroughly modernized, but it is
to the interest of the State of Maryland and its citizens because
of the State's vast investment in the University of Maryland
at College Park and finally and above all it is essential to the
welfare and security of the Nation and vital to the successful
prosecution of the war; and
WHEREAS, to make this strategic highway sufficiently modern
to handle efficiently its role in the nation's network of roads
will require the active support of the State of Maryland and
the State Roads Commission; now, therefore, be it
Resolved Ity the General Assembly of Maryland, That it is
essential to the State and to the Nation that U. S. Route
No. 1, commonly called the Washington-Baltimore Boulevard,
be widened, improved and completely modernized, so that it
may continue efficiently to carry its ever-increasing burden,
and. to that end that the State Roads Commission be requested
to take immediate action in drawing up plans for the widening,
improvement and modernization of said road, and further that
the State Roads Commission be requested to allocate whatever
funds may be necessary and available for the purpose of under-
taking to complete at the earliest possible time such widening,
improvement and modernization as may be advisable; and be it
further
Resolved, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby
directed to send copies of this resolution, under the Great Seal
of the State of Maryland, to his Excellency the Governor of
Maryland and to the Honorable Ezra B. Whitman, Chairman
of the State Roads Commission.
