1726 LAWS OF MARYLAND. [CH. 989

State for each of the preceding five (5) years by the office of
the Register of Wills for Baltimore City and by other pertinent
data which has relation to the reasonableness of the salary in
relation to the work done and volume handled by the office, it
being the intent of this Act that the said Registrant shall re-
ceive a fair and adequate compensation for the effort and
duties required of him by his office and the volume and
character of work done by him as Register in proportion to the
salary fixed by the Legislature for other Registers of Wills in
this State.

The Register of Wills of the several counties of the State
shall be entitled to receive annually the respective salaries
hereinafter set forth and no more as follows:

The Register of Wills for Calvert County shall be entitled to
receive $2, 500 annually.

The Registers of Wills for Caroline, Charles, Harford, How-
ard, Wicomico, Worcester, St. Mary's and Somerset Counties
shall each be entitled to receive the annual salary of $3, 000.

The Register of Wills of Garrett County shall be entitled to
receive the annual salary of $3, 200.

The Registers of Wills of Dorchester, Kent, Frederick, Queen
Anne's, Cecil and Talbot Counties shall each be entitled to
receive the annual salary of $3, 600.

The Registers of Wills of Anne Arundel and Prince George's
Counties shall each be entitled to receive the annual salary of
$4, 000.

The Register of Wills of Carroll County shall be entitled to
receive the annual salary of $4, 200.

The Register of Wills of Baltimore County shall be entitled
to receive the annual salary of $4, 80Q.

The Registers of Wills of Montgomery, Allegany and Wash-
ington Counties shall each be entitled to receive the annual
salary of $4, 800.

The salary first fixed by the Board of Public Works for the
Register of Wills of Baltimore City and the salaries fixed by
this section for the Registers of Wills of the several counties
shall commence as of the beginning of the term of office of the
present incumbents and shall not be increased or decreased
during the term of office of any incumbent.

The salaries of the Registers of Wills shall be payable semi-
monthly from the fees, receipts and emoluments of the office,
after first deducting therefrom the necessary expenses of the
office, including salaries of deputies and clerks, books, station-
ery, office supplies and other necessary and customary ex-
penses of doing business. If there shall be any excess of the
fees, receipts and emoluments of the office in any year, after
deduction of expenses and salaries, including that of the
Register, all such excess shall be paid to the Treasurer of the
State. If the fees and receipts of the office shall be insufficient
