1666 LAWS OF MARYLAND. [CH. 969

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Sections 716A, 716B, 716C, 716D, 716E, 716F?
716G, 716H, 716-1, 716K, 716M and 716N of Article 4 of the
Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland and Baltimore City
Charter (1938 Edition), title "Baltimore City", sub-title "Jus-
tices of the Peace and Constables", as said sections were enacted
by Chapter 137 of the Acts of 1939, be and they are hereby
repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, and two new
sections be and they are hereby added to said Article, said new
sections to be known as Sections 716-O and 716P, to follow
immediately after 716N of said Article, and all to read as
follows:

716A. The Mayor and City Council of Baltimore City shall
pay to the Chief Judge of the People's Court a salary of $7, 500
per annum, payable monthly, and to each of the Associate
Judges of the People's Court, a salary of $7, 000 per annum, pay-
able monthly, and none of said Judges shall receive any other
compensation or fees whatsoever for their services hereunder.
Each of said Judges shall devote to his duties as Judge a
regular session, from 9. 30 A. M. until 4 P. M. on every day ex-
cept Sundays and legal holidays and Saturday afternoons after
12. 30 P. M., and such other sessions at such times as the Chief
Judge deems necessary or advisable, during such eleven
months in each year as the Chief Judge shall assign. No
Judge of the People's Court shall engage in the practice of law
while holding the position of Judge. The Chief Judge shall
make such assignments in such manner as to provide such
regular sessions for the transaction of business, and such other
sessions as he shall prescribe, throughout the entire year. All
such sessions shall be held at such place as the Mayor and City
Council of Baltimore City shall provide.

716B. The People's Court of Baltimore City shall have ex-
clusive original jurisdiction at law in all civil cases arising in.
Baltimore City over which Justices of the Peace had jurisdic-
tion prior of May 5, 1941, including all cases in said City for
the enforcement of contracts and to obtain redress for wrongs,
where the debt or damages claimed shall not exceed $100; to
all suits on bonds with penalty exceeding $100 where the sum
due and claimed does not exceed $100; to actions of replevin
where the value of the thing in controversy does not exceed
$100; and to all cases of attachment in any of the cases men-
tioned in Section 36 of Article 9 where the sum claimed shall
not exceed $100; and in all cases arising under Sections 650,
651, 653,, 654 and 655 of the Baltimore City Charter.

716C. Actions triable in said Court shall be commenced
by filing a written statement of claim, in concise form and free
