cific provisions so held unconstitutional or invalid, and the
inapplicability or invalidity of any section, clause, sentence
or provision of this Act in any one or more instances shall
not be taken to affect or prejudice in any way its appli-
cability or validity in any other instance.
SEC. 4. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall
take effect June 1, 1943.

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Sections
38 and 38A of Article 1A of the Code of Public Local
Laws of Maryland (1930 Edition), title "City of Cum-
berland, " sub-title "Police and Fire, " as said Section 38
was amended and said Section 38A was enacted by
Chapter 862 of the Acts of 1941, relating to salaries,
leaves of absence and sick leaves and expenses from
injuries of members of the Police Force of Cumberland.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Sections 38 and 38A of Article 1A of the Code of Pub-
lic Local Laws of Maryland (1930 Edition), title "City of
Cumberland, " sub-title "Police and Fire, " as said Section
38 was amended and said Section 38A was enacted by
Chapter 862 of the Acts of 1941, be and they are hereby
repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as
follows:
38. (a) The Police and Fire Commissioner, with the
sanction of the Mayor and City Council, shall have power
to organize the Fire Department of the City of Cumberland
on the basis of a two-platoon system, with the hours of
duty of each of said platoons to be prescribed by the Mayor
and City Council, who shall have the power to prescribe
the rules and regulations for the shifting of said platoons.
(b) The Police and Fire Commissioner shall organize
the Police Department of said City on the basis of a three-
platoon system, with the hours of each of said platoons to
be prescribed by the Mayor and City Council, and said
Mayor and City Council shall have the power to prescribe
such rules and regulations for the shifting of said platoons
as it may deem necessary; and the assignment of members
