514. The samples referred to in Section 513 of this sub-title
may be either fresh or composite, drawn either from the
aliquot part of each lot of milk or cream sampled, or from the
composite lot thereof. Immediately before any such sample
shall be drawn, the content of the container from which it is
drawn shall be thoroughly stirred in such manner that the
milk or cream therein is thoroughly mixed. No weight tank
or container from which the aliquot part is taken for com-
posite samples or fresh samples shall have any partitions,
divisions or strainer which may divide in any way, either
vertically or horizontally, into more than one section or com-
partment the volume of milk or cream from which such sample
is taken. Each sample, plainly and properly labeled in a
manner satisfactory to the University of Maryland with the
name or number of the producer whose milk or cream is
thereby represented, shall be contained in an airtight bottle of
a type, in a position, and at a temperature to be approved by
the said University. Composite samples shall contain the
correct amount and kind of preservative prescribed by said
University. When fresh samples are used and payment for
the milk is made monthly, a representative sample shall be
taken from at least three (3) daily deliveries each month of
the several lots of milk delivered by each producer, but when
payment is made semi-monthly, such sample shall be taken
from at least two (2) such daily deliveries each half month.
All fresh samples shall be taken at scattered periods through-
out the month or half month on days to be selected by the
licensed sampler who draws such samples. Fresh samples
: shall be tested within a period of twenty-four (24) hours after
being drawn, and shall be tested on the premises where drawn,
unless permission is granted in writing by the said University
to test such samples at some other designated laboratory,
and the residue of such samples shall be held on the premises
where they were tested, available, properly refrigerated, and
in a condition suitable for check test, for a further period of
not less than forty-eight (48) hours. Fresh samples shall be
of such size that the residue for check test shall be sufficient
to make duplicate Babcock tests. Every person required by
Section 509 of this sub-title to have a permit shall, within
four (4) days after the close of each monthly or semi-monthly
testing period during which any test herein provided for has
been made, furnish to the producers of the milk or cream so
tested a written or printed statement of the average of the
several tests, showing the period of time during which said
samples were taken. When composite samples are used, a
representative sample shall be taken by a licensed sampler
from the entire daily delivery of each of the several lots of
milk and/or cream delivered by each producer, and shall
