shall be for four years from the date of their election, or
until their successors shall be duly elected and qualified.
The first election under the provisions of this section shall
be held on the first Tuesday of February, 1942, at which
time a Mayor shall be elected for a term of two years and
three Councilmen for terms of four years each from the
date of their election, or until their successors are duly
elected and qualified; and thereafter, on the first Tuesday
after the first Monday in February in each and every sec-
ond year a Mayor shall be elected for a term of two years
and three Councilmen for terms of four years; the Mayor
and three Councilmen elected in February, 1940, shall
hold office only until their successors are elected on the first
Tuesday in February, 1942, and duly qualified thereafter,
but the three Councilmen elected in February, 1941, for
terms of two years, shall continue to hold office until their
successors are elected on the first Tuesday after the first
Monday in February, 1944, and duly qualified thereafter.
252. The said Council shall meet at such place as they
may appoint, within said term, on the first Monday of every
month ensuing their election, and as much oftener by ad-
journment as they may deem necessary. The said Council
shall elect a president of the Council and appoint a clerk,
a bailiff, a treasurer, an attorney, and one or more asses-
sors of taxes, and fix; their salary. All the officers appointed
by said Council shall hold their respective office for one
year from the date of their appointment or until their suc-
cessors are appointed and qualified.
256A. At the election held on the first Tuesday in Feb-
ruary, 1942, there shall also be a Tax Collector elected from
among the citizens of said town, who shall hold office for
a term of two years, or until his successor is duly elected
and qualified, and shall receive such compensation as may
be fixed by the Council, and thereafter said office shall be
filled by election every two years. Said Council shall have
the power to remove from office any Tax Collector who shall
fail or refuse to perform properly the duties of his office,
after due notice and hearing thereon, and to fill, for the
remaining portion of his term, any vacancy which may
occur by reason of the death, resignation or removal of said
Tax Collector.
260A. The Mayor and Council shall have the power,
after the first day of January of any year, to borrow, if
necessary, for corporate purposes, on the faith and credit
of said town, a sum of money not to exceed the total uncol-
