CHAPTER 522.
(House Bill 293)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact with amendments Section 634
of Article 17 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland
of 1930, title "Prince George's County", sub-title "Laurel",
sub-heading "Tax Levy", so as to authorize the levying of
not more than Fifteen Cents ($0. 15) on each One Hundred
Dollars ($100. 00) of the assessable property in any one year
for garbage collection purposes and providing for the sub-
mission of this Act to the voters on petition.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Section 634 of Article 17 of the Code of Public Lo-
cal Laws, title "Prince George's County", sub-title "Laurel",
sub-heading "Tax Levy" be and the same is hereby repealed
and re-enacted with amendments so as to read as follows:
634. The said Mayor and City Council shall have power to
levy and collect taxes in the town, not exceeding for general
purposes in any one year, thirty-five cents on each one hun-
dred dollars of assessable property and may also levy not
exceeding Fifteen Cents ($0. 15) on each One Hundred Dollars
($100. 00) of assessable property for the purpose of establish-
ing and continuing municipal garbage collection, and shall
also levy the taxes required to meet the interest and redeem
all bonds heretofore legally issued, all of which taxes shall be
levied during the month of May in each and every year. The
taxes so levied shall be due and in arrear on the first day of
October succeeding their levy.
SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That if within thirty
days after the signing of this Act, there shall be filed with the
Mayor of Laurel a petition signed by 30% of the registered
voters of the Town of Laurel asking that said Act be referred
to a vote of the people of the town, then this Act shall be
suspended until after its approval by a majority of the voters,
voting either at a special election to be called by the Mayor
and City Council or at the next regular election for the officers
of said town. The Mayor and City Council are authorized to
call such special election at any time and either at such special
election or at the regular election, if no special election is
called before such regular election, the ballots shall have
printed thereon the words "For garbage collection tax" and
immediately thereunder the words "Against garbage collection
tax" with a square after such words in each case for the X
mark of the voters. In the event that at such election a ma-
jority of the ballots cast shall be properly marked after the
