streets, and the straightening, widening and improving the
same, and for such purposes they shall have full power of
condemnation to be exercised in accordance with the public
general laws of Maryland. They may provide by ordinance
for the establishment of th--3 width and grade of streets and
sidewalks, and the construction of the same, and the assess-
ment of the cost, or a part of the cost thereof, against the
abutting property, which cost may be made a lien against the
said property when and as they may direct, and may be col-
lected as taxes are collected. They may provide by ordinance
for the setting out of shade trees, the trimming and removal of
trees, vines or shrubbery on or along streets or sidewalks, and
for the removal of any obstructions in the streets, sidewalks,
lanes or alleys. They may by ordinance provide for licensing
of amusements, public exhibitions and all other businesses
upon such terms and conditions as to them may seem proper.
They shall have power to prevent and remove all public nui-
sances and obstructions from the streets, alleys, and lanes,
and from property adjoining the same; to restrain and punish
all disorders, disturbances and drunkenness therein; to sup-
press bawdy houses or other places of public ill-fame, or places
injurious to peace and good order; to prevent the use of guns,
cannons, pistols, rifles, air rifles, slingshots, firecrackers or
other firearms or explosives therein; to suppress fires and to
prevent the danger thereof by all reasonable regulations and
precautions; to establish and maintain a fire department or
contribute to the Volunteer Fire Department as provided for
in Chapter 139 of the Acts of Assembly of 1929. They may
by ordinance establish building lines and building regulations.,
They may regulate the erection, alteration and repair of all
buildings and grant permits therefor, specifying the material
of which the same may be built and the purpose for which
same may be used; they shall have power to restrict the erec-
tion of wooden buildings or wooden additions to buildings in
certain sections of the town, when in the judgment of the
Mayor and Common Council such restrictions shall become
prudent or necessary; to prevent and to regulate the keeping
and storing of gunpowder, oil or other explosive or combustible
material in such places and under such conditions as may
appear proper; to provide for the regulating or restraining
of all public exhibitions or amusements and to regulate the
erection of buildings therefor, and the maintenance of safe
exits therefrom; to prevent the throwing or allowing the accu-
