8. On the death of a pensioner, such reasonable funeral
expenses shall be paid as the Local Board of the County or
the Department of Welfare of Baltimore City may direct;
provided that the estate of the deceased is insufficient to
defray these expenses.
Upon the death of a pensioner, the total amount paid on
such pension, together with three per cent, interest, shall
be deducted and allowed out of the proceeds of the prop-
erty of such pensioner as a preferred claim against the
estate, ranking in order and priority after funeral expenses
as provide^ in Section 5 of Article 93 of the Code of Public
General Laws, and prior to all other claims and expenses of
whatsoever nature.
9. (1) During the continuance of the pension no pen-
sioner shall receive any other relief from the State or from
any political sub-division thereof except for medical and
surgical assistance..
(2) If the pensioner is, on the testimony of at least two
reputable witnesses, found incapable of taking care of
himself or his money, the Local Board or the Department
of Welfare of Baltimore City may direct the payment of
the pension installments to any responsible person or cor-
poration for his benefit or may suspend payment for such
period as the Local Board or the Department of Welfare
of Baltimore City shall deem advisable.
10. All pensions shall be exempt from any tax levied
by the State or by any sub-division thereof, and exempt
from levy and sale, garnishment, attachment or any other
process whatsoever and shall be inalienable in any form
and not subject to anticipation.
11. If at any time the Local Board or the Department
of Welfare of Baltimore City or the Administrator of Pen-
sions and Relief believe that a pension has been improperly
obtained, the said Local Board or the Department of Wel-
fare of Baltimore City or the Administrator of Pensions
and Relief shall cause special inquiry to be made and may
suspend payment of any installment pending the inquiry.
If upon inquiry it appears that the pension was improperly
obtained, it shall be cancelled; but if it appears that the
pension was properly obtained, the suspended installments
shall be payable in due course.
