646 LAWS OF MARYLAND. [CH. 348

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Section 19, of Article 51, of the Annotated Code of
the Public General Laws of Maryland, be and the same is hereby
repealed and re-enacted to read as follows:

19. The right of peremptory challenge shall be allowed to any
person who shall be tried on presentment or indictment for any
crime or misdemeanor, the punishment whereof by law is death or
confinement in the Penitentiary, and to the State on the trial of
such indictment or presentment; but the accused shall not chal-
lenge more than twenty nor the State more than ten jurors for
each accused person then being on trial, whether by joint in-
dictment or separate indictments, without assigning cause.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take
effect on June 1, 1927.

CHAPTER 348.

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact with amendments Section 636
of Article 4 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland
(Revised Edition of 1915), title aCity of Baltimore, " sub-
title "Justices of the Peace and Constables, " as said section
was amended by Chapter 186 of the Acts of 1922, increas-
ing the compensation of the Police Magistrates of Baltimore
City.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Section 636 of Article 4 of the Code of Public Local
Laws of Maryland (Revised Edition of 1915), title "City of Bal-
timore, " sub-title "Justices of the Peace and Constables, " as said
section was amended by Chapter 186 of the Acts of 1922, be and
it is hereby repealed and re-enacted with amendments, to read
as follows:

636. Each Justice of the Peace selected to sit at a station-
house in the City of Baltimore shall receive the sum of Thirty-
five Hundred ($3, 500). Dollars per annum, to be paid monthly,
or a proportionable part thereof, so long as he shall continue
to act at a station-house in said city, under the selection of
the Governor; which sum of money shall be paid to him by
the City Register at the end of each month of his said service,
or a proportionable part thereof, at the end of any portion of
