ers of Montgomery County to appoint three or more, not ex-
ceeding six, additional constables for Montgomery County at
large, on the first Tuesday of July in the year 1922, for a
term of two years from the date of appointment, and to provide
rules and regulations governing the duties of said constables
and provide for their compensation and the expenses and
equipment, said constables to be known and designated as
'Montgomery County Police, ' " be and the same is hereby re-
pealed and re-enacted to read as follows:
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That the County Commissioners of Montgomery County
are hereby authorized, empowered, and directed to appoint
such number not to exceed 20 police officers for Mont-
gomery County at large, as they may deem necessary for the
better protection of persons and property in Montgomery
County, on the first Tuesday of July in the year 1927 for a
term of two years from the date of the appointment, and the
County Commissioners shall, on the first Tuesday of July in
every second year thereafter appoint such police officers, not
exceeding 20, for Montgomery County at large, as they may
deem necessary, for a term of two years, said police officers so
appointed to be known as and designated as "Montgomery
County Police. "
Section 2. Be it further enacted, That the County Com-
missioners shall designate one of said police officers so ap-
pointed, as chief of the Montgomery County Police at a salary
not to exceed the sum of Three Thousand ($3, 000. 00) dollars
per annum, payable in equal monthly installments. And in ad-
dition to said salary the County Commissioners are authorized
to allow the said chief of police the sum of Six hundred
($600. 00) dollars for maintenance and upkeep of the auto-
mobiles to be used by the chief of police and any expenses for
uniforms, to be worn as the County Commissioners may pre-
scribe for the said Chief of Police. That the Chief of Police,
as aforesaid, shall have control and supervision over the other
members of the force, and shall assign members of said force
at such hours and duties as said chief of police may think
proper, subject, however, at all times to such rules, orders and
regulations as the County Commissioners may from time to
time prescribe or ordain.
Section 3. And be it further enacted, That the County
Commissioners of Montgomery County shall designate three
