tion of the Conowingo Dam, and by reason thereof there are
more prisoners now in jail and more criminal work pending
before the Court than has ever been before in the history of
Harford County; and

WHEREAS, Due to the above facts, it has been necessary for
the sheriff to employ two regular deputies instead of one,
which incurs additional expense in the operations of his said
office; and

WHEREAS. By reason of the employment of said addi-
tional deputies, the expense account allowed the sheriff is not
sufficient to pay said deputies and the other necessary ex-
penses connected with said office; therefore

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That Section 250, of Article 13, of the Code of
Public Local Laws of Maryland, titled "Harford County, "
sub-titled "Sheriff, " be, and the same is hereby repealed and
re-enacted with amendments, to read as follows:

Section 250. The Board of County Commissioners of
Harford County are authorized and directed to levy for and
pay to the Sheriff of Harford County, annually, in equal
monthly payments, the sum of twenty-five hundred dollars,
and said Sheriff shall also be allowed the sum of four
thousand dollars annually, to be levied by said Board of
County Commissioners of Harford County and paid to said
Sheriff by said County Commissioners in equal monthly pay-
ments, for all expenses of his office, including two regular
deputies, clerical force and assistance, and other necessary
deputies to assist him in the discharge of his duties, which sums
shall be in full for all claims of said Sheriff against Harford
County or said Board of County Commissioners, for his care,
labor, responsibility and expense in discharging the duties
of his office, including the keeping safe in jail the prisoners
committed to his custody, the cooking and serving to said
prisoners, the provisions provided for them by said Sheriff,
the necessary washing for said prisoners and keeping the jail
in cleanly condition; and said Board of County Commis-
sioners shall not pay said Sheriff for any services he may
render in the discharge of his official dirties any further or
other compensation, and shall not be in any way liable for
any other fee or compensation whatever, to said Sheriff than
