week, instead of Seventeen Dollars and Fifty Cents ($17. 50)
per week, as now provided by law. The aforesaid salaries shall
be payable in the manner now prescribed by law for the pay-
ment of those holding the same grade, rank or position in the
said Police Department, —provided, however, that each member
of the Police Department of Baltimore City, shall be entitled to
additional compensation as follows: —After serving five (5)
years, to the amount of two and one-half (2 1/2) per cent, of the
salary of his grade or position; after serving ten (10) years, five
(5) per cent, of the salary of his -grade or position; after serving
fifteen (15) years, seven and one-half (7 1/2) per cent, of the
salary of his grade or position; after serving twenty (20) years,
ten (10) per cent, of the salary of his grade or position; after
serving twenty-five (25) years, twelve and one-half (12 1/2) Per
cent of his grade or position; after serving thirty (30) years, fif-
teen (15) per cent, of the salary of his grade or position; pro-
vided, however, that the increase in the grade or base pay herein-
before provided shall take effect as to time as follows: One-half
(1/2) of the said increase in said grade or base pay, as hereinbe-
fore provided, shall be paid beginning January 1st, 1928, and
provided further that, beginning January 1st, 1929, the entire
increase in said grade or base pay, as hereinbefore provided,
shall become effective, and provided further that the additional
compensation for length of service, shall continue in force as
now provided by law.
SEC. 2. And be it further enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That the Police Commissioner is hereby authorized
to add to the Police Force of Baltimore City, fifteen (15) ser-
geants to the number now provided by law, one hundred and
eighty-five (185), making a total of two hundred (200) ser-
geants; and to add four hundred and fifty (450) patrolmen to
the number now provided toy law, thirteen hundred and fifty
(1350), making a total of eighteen hundred (1800) patrolmen;
which sergeants and patrolmen shall be appointed, enrolled
and equipped by the Police Commissioner for the said City
in the same manner as the present members of the said
Police Force, and the members of the said Police Force who
shall be appointed under the provisions of this. Section shall
receive the same compensation which may foe provided by law
for members of the same rank or grade in the said Police Force
of said City; provided, 'however, that the fifteen (15) addi-
tional sergeants shall not be appointed before January 1st, 1929;
and provided further that the Police Commissioner shall appoint
no patrolmen in excess of thirteen hundred and fifty (the num-
ber now authorized by law) prior to the 1st day of January,
1928; or any patrolmen in excess of fifteen hundred and seventy-
five (1575) prior to January 1st, 1929.
