1654 JOINT RESOLUTIONS.
the wider portions of these creeks are in Virginia. Such enjoy-
ment continued uninterruptedly until a short time ago, when
crabs began to get scarce and consequently of greater monetary
value. Then residents of a nearby island in Virginia appealed
to their fishery force to maintain strict patrol over the boun-
dary referred to, and thus prevent the residents of Smith's
Island from pursuing the peaceful avocation which they and
their forbears had enjoyed since the Island was first settled,
thus depriving them of the right to take crabs within the waters
encompassed by the headlands of said Island, which seriously
interferes with their ability to make a livelihood for their fam-
ilies, as they have no agricultural resources, but depend entirely
on water products for subsistence. Therefore,
Be it resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
the State of Maryland by its Governor shall commission the
Conservation Commissioner of Maryland, and the State of
Virginia, through its Legislature ask for a similar resolution
authorizing the appointment of the Commissioner of Fisheries
of Virginia, to represent their respective States in negotiations
to establish the common right of crab fisheries within the waters
of Tyler's and Shank's Creeks, which are tributaries of Tan-
gier Sound, for the purpose of permitting the citizens of either
State to enjoy the right of free fishing for crabs within these
waters, whether the same be within the boundary line of either
State.
Be it resolved further. That the Governor of Maryland shall
cause a copy of this Joint Resolution, under the Great Seal of
the State of Maryland, to be sent to the Governor of the State
of Virginia.
Approved April 5, 1927.
