CHAPTER 4.
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact with amendments Section 124
of Article 14 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland,
title "Howard County, " sub-title "Sheriff, " as said section
was enacted by Chapter 664 of the Acts of the General
Assembly of Maryland of 1. 920; this enactment providing
for an increase in the salary of the Deputy Sheriffs and
the Warden of the jail.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That Section 124 of Article 14 of the Public Local
Laws of Maryland, title "Howard County, " sub-title "Sheriff, "
as said section was enacted by Chapter 664 of the acts of the
General Assembly of Maryland of 1920, be and the same is
hereby repealed and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
124. Sheriff of Howard County shall receive an annual
salary of fifteen hundred dollars from and after the first day
of May, 1908, to be paid him in quarterly installments of three
hundred and seventy-five dollars by the County Commission-
ers of Howard County, and the said County Commissioners
shall pay to the Sheriff, upon the presentation of proper
vouchers the actual car fare or team hire incurred by the Sheriff
or his deputies in conducting any prisoner to an institution to
which he has been committed by the proper tribunal, and he
shall appoint six deputies, one from each of the six election
districts of Howard County, and the County Commissioners
of Howard County shall pay said deputies an annual salary of
three hundred dollars each, to be paid in quarterly installments
of seventy-five dollars. He shall collect all fees and charges
to which he may be entitled by law, and exercise all powers
conferred upon him by law to enforce the collection of same,
and shall at the end of each month during his term of office
make a sworn report of the same to the County Commissioners
of Howard County, in such form as said Commissioners of
Howard County may direct, and pay over the same to the
County Commissioners of Howard County; whenever any
Sheriff shall retire from office leaving any costs, fees or charges
uncollected, lawfully payable to him, his successor shall col-
lect and pay over the same. He shall appoint a warden of
the county jail who shall be under his supervision and direc-
tion, who shall take charge of the jail and carefully and secure-
ly guard all prisoners who shall be placed in said jail, which
