county to execute the writ of search warrant. He shall be ac-
tive in quelling riot, disorders and disturbances of the peace
within the limits of said city, and shall take into custody all
persons so offending against the public peace, and shall have
the authority to take suitable and sufficient bail for the appear-
ance before said court of any person charged with an offense
within the jurisdiction of said court; and it shall be his duty
to arrest all persons who shall obstruct or interfere with him
in the execution of the duties of his office or who shall be guilty
of disorderly conduct or any disturbance whatever. He shall
give such bond for the faithful, performance of his duty, and
perform such, other duties and possess such other powers, rights
and authority, in addition to those herein provided, as the
Mayor and City Council may require and confer upon him, not
inconsistent with the Constitution and laws of this State, and
the provisions of this Act. In the case of absence, sickness or
inability to act of the Chief of Police, the said Police and Fire
Commissioner shall have the power, and it shall be his duty to
designate some other member of said Police Department as
Acting Chief of Police during the period of such absence, sick-
ness or inability of said Chief of Police.
(g) The Chief of the Fire Department shall be charged with
the duty of superintending directing the extinguishment of
fires, and preservation and safe-keeping of all fire engines, hose
and other apparatus used in connection therewith; and it is
hereby made his duty to keep away from the vicinity of any
fire, all idle and suspicious and disorderly persons and to com-
pel all officers of the city and all other persons to aid in the
extinguishment of fire and the preservation of property exposed
to danger thereafter and in preventing goods from being stolen
and generally to carry out and enforce such regulations for the
prevention and extinguishment of fire as may be by said Mayor
and City Council deemed expedient.
37. The Mayor and City Council of Cumberland, Maryland,
be and they are hereby authorized and empowered to retire
from the city police force, city policemen when they arrive at
the age of sixty-five years, and if said policeman so retired
shall have served on said police force for twenty years next
preceding said retirement, he shall be entitled to receive there-
after from said City of Cumberland the sum of forty dollars
per month during his life.
38. The Police and Fire Commissioner, with the sanction
of the Mayor and City Council, shall have power to organize
