146 MARYLAND;

1663. A patent granted to Lord Clarendon,
and others for thr territory now forming the
states of North and South Carolina.

1664. New Jersey granted to the Duke of
York, by Charles II. and made a distinct
government It had been settled for so me
years by families from England.

New Netherlands taken from the
Dutch, and its name changed to New York,
in honor of the Duke of York, to whom it
was also granted by the king.

1669—South Carolina settled by Governor
Sayle.

1671. The importation of negroes irto Mary-
land encouraged.

1682—Pennsylvania settled by William Penn,

with a colony of Quakers.

1728—North Carolina erected into a separate
government—It had been settled previously
by English families.

1732—Georgia settled by General Olethorpc.

1775—Kentucky settled by Colonel Boone.

1777—Vermont settled by emigrants from
Connecticut.

1781—Ohio settled.
