revoked their charter, and usurped their
rights and government. £160,000 had been
extended in planting the colony ; 9000 per-
sons had been sent from England to the set-
tlement Yet the annual importation from
Virginia did not excerd $20,000, and the
population was reduced to 1800 persons.
The whole legislative, executive and judi-
cial powers were now conferred by the king-
upon a governor and twelve counsellors, nam-
ed by himself.

1627. Delaware settled by the Swedes and
Fins.

1628. Massachusetts bay settled by Captain
John Endicot and company.

1629. The evils of this form of government
soon became insufferable. Roused at length
to madness by the oppression which it en-
gendered, the Virginians, seized their go-
vernor. Sir John Henry, and sent him a pri-
soner to England, accompanied by two de-
puties, charged with the task of representing
their grievances and his misconduct.
The facilities of obtaining large tracts of

land induced emigration to a considerable
amount. In 1650, Virginia contained about
50,000 inhabitants.

1631—King Charles 1st, of England, granted
to George, Lord Baltimore, the Province
ot Maryland.

Owing to the death of George before.
