fit them for any sphere in society According
to the means which it was in the potter of the
state at that time to command, it appropri-
ated handsomely to its support.* The at-
tempt was seconded by liberal contributions
fron; individuals, which enabled the trustees
to procure an admirable scite, erect the ne--
cessary building thereon, and obtain a re-
spectable apparatus and library. Deeply is it to
be deplored that subsequent legislatures, in-
stead of fostering such a beginning, should
have entirely withdrawn the appropriation for
its support, and suffered it, as they did, todwin-
dle into insignificance. A change of feeling
and we sincerely hope, of policy, towards the
institution has at length taken the place of cold
neglect. The trustees of the institution have
remained steadily at their posts for more than
20 years, and devoted the means which their
reverse of fortune had left them, in the best
mannerr they could to sustain the establishment.
They have at present a gentleman at the head
of the institution of very respectable talents
and strict application. He is assisted by a
Proftssor of mathematics ard civil engineer-
ing, a Professor of ancient languages, a Pro.
lessor of modern languages, and a Proltssor
of grammar, The students are also instruct-
ed in military tactics, and organized as a
