tcribed by the act, entitled, A supplement to the acr to erect a town in Queen-Anne's county, passed
November session, seventeen hundred and ninety-six; and that from and after the passage of this
act, no person shall be appointed a commissioner of Centre-Ville who does not hold real property
within the limits 'of said town above the value of three hundred dollars.

CHAP.
LIV.

IV. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the court-house and public ground in said town shall be vested,
in trust, in the commissioners, and their successors, so far as to preserve the same, and to prevent
abuses and depredations thereon; and that they shall have power and authority to cause to be re-
moved so much of the earth in front of the court-house as may be necessary for levelling and making
even the public ground, and to apply the earth so to be removed, or so much thereof as may be
necessary, for filling up and levelling the public ground at the back of the court-house, and in such
other way as they may direct; and that the said commissioners shall be authorised to cause a well to
be made OH the public ground in front of the court-house, and therein to erect a pump if they shall
think necessary.

V. AND, whereas it is necessary that provision should be made to. enable the commissioners to

carry this section into effect, BE IT ENACTED, That the justices of the levy court of Queen-Anne's
county be and they are hereby authorised and directed to levy on the assessable property of said
county, at the time of laying their next county levy, the sum of two hundred dollars, which sum
the colleclor of the county shall collect as other county charges, and pay to the said commissioners,
or their order.

CHAP. LV.

Justices to levy-
money, &c.

An ACT authorising a lottery to raise a sum of money for improving
the streets of Elizabeth-town, in Washington county.

Passed 8th of
January, 1803.

BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That it shall and may be lawful for Natha-
niel Rochester, Adam Ott, Otho Holland Williams, Jacob Harry and William Hyser, or a ma-
jority of them, to propose a scheme or schemes of a lottery for raising a. sum of money, not exceed-
ing two thousand dollars, and to sell and dispose of the tickets thereof; provided the said Nathaniel
Rochester, Adam Ott, Otho Holland Williams, Jacob Harry and William Hyser, or such majority
of them as shall undertake to aft under this law, shall, before the sale or disposal of any ticket or
tickets in said lottery, give their bond to the state of Maryland, in the penalty of five thousand
dollars, conditioned, that they will well and truly apply so much of the money arising therefrom,
within six months after the drawing of said lottery shall commence, as will satisfy the fortunate ad-
venturers for prizes drawn, by them, and after deducting the necessary expenees Incurred in said
lottery, shall, within twelve months from the time the drawing of said lottery shall commence, cause
the said streets in Elizabeth-town, in Washington county, to be improved in the best manner the
sum of money raised by said lottery will admit.

II. AND BE IT ENACTED, That it shall be the duty or said commissioners, before they act as
such, to lodge such bond in the clerk's office of Washington county, there to be recorded, and upon
aruch bond, or any office copy thereof, suit or suits may be instituted against the obligors therein, or
any of them, or their legal representatives, for any breach or non-compliance with the condition of
the same.
CHAP. LVL

Bond to be
lodged, &c.

An ACT to authorise a lottery, in Frederick county.

WHEREAS it is represented to this general assembly, by the petition of sundry inhabitants of
Middle-town, and its vicinity, in Frederick county, that they are exposed to great danger
from fire, and have prayed that an act may pass, authorising a lottery for raising a sum of money for
the purpose of purchasing a fire engine for the use and safety of said town; and the same being con-
sidered reasonable and proper, therefore,

January, 1803.

Preamble.

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That Frederick Stemple, Thomas Pow-
ell, Peter Shewman, Henry Stemple and Samuel Shoup, or a majority of them, be and they are
hereby authorised to propose a scheme of a lottery for raising the sum of four hundred dollars for
the purpose, aforesaid, and to sell and dispose of the tickets therein.

III. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the said Frederick Stemple, Thomas Powell, Peter Shewman,
Henry Stemple and Samuel Shoup, before they proceed to the sale of any ticket or tickets in said
lottery, shall give and execute a bond to the state of Maryland, in the penalty of one thousand dol-
lars,
