A petition from sundry inhabitants of Somerset county, praying for a road through the lands of Sarah and
Whittington Polk, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Winder, Mr. Jackson and Mr. King, to consider
and report thereon.

A petition from sundry inhabitants of North Sassafras, West Sassafras and Bohemia Hundreds, in Caecil
county, praying that hogs may not be permitted to go at large, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Cox,
Mr. Ward, Mr. Mitchell, Mr. Porter and Mr. Moffit, to consider and report thereon.

A petition from Patrick Macgill, of Anne-Arundel county, praying that the inspector at Elk-ridge Landing
warehouse may be directed to keep a seal, to be fixed to every sample of tobacco, was preferred, read, and re-
ferred to Mr. Merriken, Mr. Belt, Mr. Chapman, Mr. Gardiner, Mr. Blakistone, Mr. Hall and Mr. M'Pherson,

to consider and report thereon.

A memorial from William Gwinn, of the city of Baltimore, praying that Baltimore county may be directed to
convey to him a certain lot upon his paying for the same, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Aisquith,
Mr. Little, Mr. Harryman, Mr. R. Steuart and Mr. M. Brown, to consider and report thereon.

A petition from sundry inhabitants of Montgomery county, praying a change in the place of holding the elec-
tion for the fourth district in said county, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Watts, Mr. Carroll and
Mr. Selby, to consider and report thereon.

The report on the petition of Rinaldo Johnson was read the second time, and, on motion, the question was
put, That the resolution therein contained be stricken out? Determined in the negative.

The question was then put. That the house assent to the said resolution? Determined in the negative.

The report on the memorial of Frederick Green was read the second time, and the question put, That the
house concur with the same, and assent to the order therein contained? The yeas and nays being required, ap-
peared as follow:

So it was resolved in the affirmative.

Mr. Bond and Mr. White have leave of absence.

The house resumed the consideration of the bill for the encouragement of learning in this state, and for other
purposes, and on progression, the question was put, That the following be inserted after the clause relative to
St. John's college, to wit: " And be it enacted, That the treasurer of the eastern shore be and he is hereby
authorised and directed to pay annually, in quarterly payments, to the visitors and governors of Washington
college, and their successors, the sum of one thousand dollars, as a donation of this state to the said college. "
The yeas and nays being required, appeared as follow:

So it was determined in the negative.

On motion, That the following be added in the same place as an amendment to said bill, to wit: " And be
