electional districts; which was read the first time and ordered to lie on the table.
M. Philip Stuart, a delegate returned for Charles county, appeared, and after qualifying in the mode pre.
scribed by the constitution and form of government, and taking an oath to support the constitution of the
United States, took his seat in the house.
Mr. M'Pherson, from the committee, delivers to the speaker a bill, entitled, A supplement to the act, entitled,
An act for the amendment of the law in certain cases; which was read the first time and ordered to lie on the table.
On motion, Leave given to bring in a bill supplementary to the act to provide for the organization and regu-
lation of the courts of common law in this state, and for the administration of justice therein. ORDERED, That
Mr. Jackson, Mr. Shaaff" and Mr. Winder, be a committee to prepare and bring in the same.
A petition from sundry minors of Worcester county, by their guardians and friends, praying that persons
committing trespass on the timber ground in Pocomoke river swamp, and who have no property to pay damages,
may be subject to corporal punishment, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. White, Mr. Sturgis and Mr.
Dashiell, to consider and report thereon.
A petition from sundry inhabitants of Frederick county, praying a person may be -appointed in each county as
inspector of all the public offices in the county in which he may reside, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr.
Waters, Mr. Aisquith, Mr. Hawkins, Mr. Harryman and Mr. Biggs, to consider and report thereon.
Mr. White, from the committee, delivers to the speaker a bill, entitled, An act authorising a lottery to raise
a sum of money for the purpose of building a mill in Worcester county; which was read the first time and or-
dered to lie on the table.
A petition from Thomas Jackson and Henry Haskins, of Dorchester county, stating, that they bonded for
lot No. 6, part of the Indian lands, and that there appears to be a deficiency therein of 4 3/4 acres, and praying
that the treasurer may be authorised to credit their bond for the same, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr.
Smoot, Mr. Merriken and Mr: Dennis, to consider and report thereon.
On motion, Leave given to bring in a bill, entitled, Au additional supplement to an act, entitled. An act for
regulating the mode of staying execution, and repealing the acts of assembly therein mentioned, and for other
purposes. ORDERED, That Mr. Waters, Mr. Davis, Mr. Kerr, Mr. M'Pherson and Mr. R. Steuart, be a
committee to prepare and bring in the same.
The following resolution was read.
Whereas large sums of money have been expended by the state in repairing the government-house and its ap-
pertenances, ami in furnishing the same: And whereas the property of the state in the said house, as also the
enclosures, are annually exposed to the depredations of certain evil disposed persons, thereby occasioning a.
great expence to the state; therefore RESOLVED, That the governor and council be and they are hereby au-
thorised and empowered, annually to appoint such person as they may think proper, whose duty it shall be to
protect from injury, as well the public property in the said house, as also the enclosures, and to keep the same
in constant repair; provided always, that the person by the executive appointed as aforesaid shall be responsible
for all loss or damage that may happen to the public property aforesaid, during the absence of the governor,
and before the appointment of another; and the governor and council are hereby further authorised and em-
powered, annually to allow such person, so employed by them as aforesaid, such sum of money for his services
as they may think adequate, not exceeding the sum of ———————— dollars, to be paid out of any unappro-
priated money in the treasury.
On motion, Leave given to bring in a bill, entitled, An act for the regulation of officers fees. ORDERED,
That Mr. M'Pherson, Mr. Pearce, Mr. M. Brown, Mr. Hebb, Mr. Chapman, Mr. Lyles and MT. Beall, be a
committee to prepare and bring in the same.

THE house met. Present the same members as on yesterday. The proceedings of yesterday were read.
Mr. Little appears in the house. Mr. Brice Selby, a delegate returned for Montgomery county, appeared, and
after qualifying in the mode prescribed by the constitution and form of government, and taking an oath to sup-
port the constitution of the United States, look his seat in the house.
A petition from the president and directors of the Mechanics Bank in the city of Baltimore, praying to be
incorporated, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Aisquith, Mr. Winder, Mr. Muir, Mr. R. Steuart, Mr.
C. Hodges, Mr. Little and Mr. Bond, to consider and report thereon,
A petition from Thomas Poteet, of Harford county, praying a law may pass authorising the levy court of
said county to levy a sum of money as a compensation to him for building a gaol therein, was preferred, read,
and referred to Mr. Street, Mr. Brown and Mr. Bond, to consider and report thereon.
A petition from Gabriel J. Mattingly, of Saint-Mary's county, praying a law may pass confirming his title to
a parcel of land conveyed to him by his wife, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Hebb, Mr. Chapman,
Mr. W. H. Brown, Mr. Frisby and Mr. Jackson, to consider and report, thereon.
