inexpedient at this time for the legislature to interfere.

Which was read the first and second time by especial order and concurred in.

A petition of the grand masters and other officers of the grand lodge of Maryland, praying permission to in-
stitute a scheme of a lottery to raise a sum of money for the purpose of erecting a masonic hall in the city of
Baltimore, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Montgomery, Mr. Cockey, Mr. Waters, Mr. Stuart "and
Mr. Lloyd, to consider and report thereon.

Mr. Bruce, from the committee, delivers to the speaker the following report:

THE committee to whom was referred the petition of Joshua Stevenson, report, that they have taken the
same under consideration, and are of opinion that the prayer of the petitioner ought to be granted, and that
leave be given him tu be heard at the bar of the house by counsel.

Which was read the first and second time by especial order, and the question put, Will the house concur
therewith ? Determined in the negative.

The bill, entitled, An act for the benefit of Robert Williams, a free black man, and of his wife and children,
was read the second time and passed.

The bill, entitled, An act to lay out and streighten a certain road in Baltimore county, was read the second
time and passed.

The house proceeded to the second reading of the bill, entitled, An act relative to sheriff's and constables,
when, on motion, the question was put, That the further consideration of the said bill be postponed ? Resolved
in the affirmative.

Mr. Carroll, from the committee, delivers to the speaker a bill, entitled, An act to extend the powers of the
trustees of the poor of Montgomery county; which was read the first time and ordered to lie on the table.

On motion, the question was put, That leave be given to bring in a bill, entitled, An act to withdraw the
donations heretofore granted by the state to the several academies and schools therein mentioned ? The yeas
and nays being required, appeared as follow:

WEDNESDAY, January 8, 1806.

THE house met. Present the same members as on yesterday. The proceedings of yesterday were read.
Mr. Cresap has leave of absence for the remainder of the session.

A petition from the trustees of the poor of Prince-George's county, stating, that the land allotted to the
poor is almost destitute of wood, and praying a law may pass to authorise them to make an exchange of the same,
was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Hall, Mr. Van-Horn and Mr. Callis, to consider and report thereon.

Mr. Montgomery, from the committee, delivers to the speaker a bill, entitled, An act authorising the draw-
ing of a lottery to defray the expence of building a masonic hall in the city of Baltimore; which was read the
first time and ordered to lie on the table.

The clerk of the senate delivers the resolution in favour of Patrick Murdock, of Allegany county, and the
resolution in favour of Marsham Parker, severally endorsed, " dissented from. " The bill, entitled, An act to
alter and change the name of Elizabeth Sower, of the city of Baltimore, to that of Elizabeth Lammot, en-
dorsed, " will not pass. " And a bill, entitled, An act. to reduce into one the several acts of assembly respect-
ing elections, and to regulate said elections, endorsed, "will pass; " which was read the first time and ordered
to lie on the table.

Mr. Dorsey, from the committee, delivers to the speaker the following report:

THE committee to whom was referred the petition of Martha Hall, administratrix of Edward Hall, having
taken the subject under their consideration, report, that at October session, seventeen hundred and eighty, an
act passed the general assembly, entitled, An act to seize, confiscate and appropriate, all British property with-
in this state, by which law all property within this state, debts only excepted, belonging to British subjects,
was seized and confiscated to the use of this state; and by the same act a provision was made for the payment
of the debts due to our own citizens, by declaring that the subjects of the state, who were creditors of British,
subjects, should be paid and satisfied out of the British property seized and confiscated under that act.
