of £. 240 11 11 current money, and costs, against William Mollison, surviving partner of William and Robert
Mollison, that no further proceedings were had in the case, as the state bad confiscated the real property of the
defendant, and praying that a law may pass authorising the treasurer to pay to the petitioner the aforesaid claim,

was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Dorsey, Mr. Shaaff and Mr. Merriken, to consider and report
thereon.

A petition from sundry inhabitants of Pennsylvania and New-Jersey, stating, that they still hold considera-
ble sums in bills of credit issued by the state of Maryland, and praying that their case may be taken into con-
sideration, and such relief granted as the justice of their claim demands, was preferred, read, and referred to
Mr. Shaaff, Mr. Chapman, Mr. Stephen, Mr. Montgomery and Mr. Bayly, to consider and report thereon.

On motion, Leave given to bring in a bill, entitled, An act to extend further the powers of the clerks of the

several counties of this state. ORDERED, That Mr. Ennalls, Mr, Lloyd and Mr. Bayard, be a committee to
prepare and bring in the same.

A petition from John Love, of Harford county, praying that the levy court of said county be directed to pay
him the interest and costs on a suit brought against the petitioner as collector of said county, was preferred,
read, and referred to Mr. Montgomery, Mr. Street and Mr. Ayres, to consider and report thereon.

The report of the committee on the memorial of John Sprigg Belt, William Hammond, Philemon Griffith and
Joshua Griffith, was read the second time and the resolution therein contained assented to.

A petition from sundry inhabitants of the city of Baltimore, praying an extension of Pratt-street, was pre-
ferred, read, and referred to the committee appointed on a petition of a similar nature.

Mr. Bayard, from the committee, delivers to the speaker a bill, entitled, An act for draining part of a branch
called Old-town Branch, lying in the upper part of Caroline county; which was read the first time and ordered
to lie on the table.

On the second reading of the report of the committee on the petition of Thomas Meredith, of Baltimore
county, the question was put, That the words " with interest thereon from the seventeenth day of September,
seventeen hundred and eighty-five, " be stricken out of the resolution therein contained ? Resolved in the affir-

mative.

The resolution being read throughout, the question was put, Will the house concur with the said report and
assent to the said resolution? Resolved in the affirmative.

Mr. Stephen, from the committee, delivers to the speaker a bill, entitled, An act for the benefit of the cor-
poration of the Roman catholic clergymen, and for other purposes; which was read the first time and ordered
to lie on the table.

The bill for the relief of William Thomas and John Carvil Hynson, junior, of Kent county, was read the
second time and passed.

A petition from Richard Gittings and Lambert Smith, of the city of Baltimore, praying a special act of in-
solvency, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Montgomery, Mr. Stephen and Mr. Chapman, to consider
and report thereon.

Mr. Jackson, from the committee, delivers to the speaker a bill, entitled, An act for the relief of Richard
Waters, of William, Ezekiel Gilliss and Richard Minish, of Somerset county; which was read the first time
and ordered to lie on the table.

On motion, Leave given lo bring in a bill, entitled, A further additional supplement to the act, entitled, An
act to direct descents. ORDERED, That Mr. Stephen, Mr. Montgomery and Mr. Chapman, be a committee to
prepare and bring in the same.

The report of the committee on the petition of Charles F. Brodhag was read the second time and the reso-
lution therein contained assented to.

The house, according to the order of the day, proceeded to the second reading of the act to provide for the
election of commissioners to settle and ascertain the public taxes in each county cf this state, and for other
purposes; on motion, the question was put, That the word " commissioners" be stricken out of the title of
the said bill ? Determined in the negative.

On progression in reading the said bill, the question was put, That the word " April" be stricken out of the
first clause thereof? Resolved in the affirmative.

On motion, the question was then put, That the word "October" be inserted in lieu of the word stricken
out ? Resolved in the affirmative.

On further progression, the question was put. That the words " except Baltimore county" be stricken out of
said clause? Resolved in the affirmative.

The question was then put, That the word " and" be inserted in lieu of the words stricken out? Resolved
in the affirmative.

On further progression, the question was put, That the words " and in each of the election districts of Bal-
timore county -respectively, " be stricken out of the second clause of said bill? Resolved in the affirmative.

On further progression, the question was put, that the following clause be stricken out of said bill? viz.

"And be it enacted. That no person who shall be elected a commissioner of levy, and qualify as such, shall act as
a justice of the peace, or hold any office of profit or trust within this state, during the time for which he shall
have been elected. " Resolved in the affirmative.
