mery, to consider and report thereon.

A petition from Corbin Preston, of Harford county, praying an act of insolvency, was preferred, read, and
referred to the committee appointed on petitions of a similar nature.

A petition from Thomas Meredith, of Baltimore county, praying to be reimbursed for an overpayment made
by his father for confiscated property purchased by him from the state, was preferred, read, and referred to
Mr. Ogden, Mr. Watts and Mr. Lemmon, to consider and report thereon.

The report on the petition of John B. Beall, of Allegany county, was read the second time and the resoluti-
on therein contained assented to.

A petition from Absalom Barney Tracey, John Barney Tracey, William Barney Tracey, Amelia Barney
Tracey, Thomas Barney Tracey and Moses Barney Tracey, of Baltimore county, praying that their names
may be changed from Tracey to Gill, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Ellicott, Mr. Stephen and Mr.
Lemmon, to consider and report thereon.

A petition from sundry inhabitants of the city and county of Baltimore, praying a road may be opened from
Old-town, to connect with the falls turnpike road at a point most advantageous, and that a market may be erected
in Old-town for an evening or other market, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Stephen Mr. Ellicott, Mr.
Lemmon, Mr. Harryman and Mr. Lloyd, to consider and report thereon.

A memorial from the president and directors of the Chesapeake and Delaware canal company, praying that
the legislature would grant them aid, either by subscribing, on the behalf of the state, for part of the undis-
posed stock of the canal, or in any other manner which to them in their wisdom might seem proper, was pre-
ferred and read; the house proceeded to ballot for a committee to consider and report thereon; the ballots be-
ing deposited in the ballot box, the gentlemen named to strike retired, and after sometime returned and report-
ed, that Mr. Lloyd, Mr. Mercer, Mr. Chapman, Mr. Ward, Mr. Jackson, Mr. Bayly and Mr. Bishop, were
elected

The house, according to the order of the day, proceeded to the second reading of the bill, entitled, A sup-
plement to an act concerning estates tail. On motion, the question was put, That the said bill be referred to
the consideration of the next general assembly? The yeas and nays being required, appeared as follow:

A petition from sundry inhabitants of the western precincts of Baltimore, praying an alteration in their
election district, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Lemmon, Mr. Harryman and Mr. Montgomery, to
consider and report thereon.

A petition from Anne Reynolds, of Talbot county, stating, that while she was the widow of a certain Pa-
trick M'Intire, deceased, she became the proprietor of a house and lot in said county, but she hath been in-
formed that her title to the same is insecure, in consequence of her being a foreigner, and praying that the
right of the state to the same may be relinquished, and the same vested in the petitioner, during her natural
life, and after her decease to her children which she had by the said M'Intire, and their heirs, as joint tenants,
Was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Lloyd, Mr. Denny and Mr. Spencer, to consider and report thereon.

On motion, ORDERED, That the bill to withdraw the funds from Washington and Saint-John's colleges, and
subject the same to the appropriation of the legislature, have a second reading on Friday the 20th instant.

Mr. Stephen, from the committee, delivers to the speaker a bill, entitled, An act to ratify and confirm the
marriage articles between Ely Dorsey, of Ely, of Frederick county, and Araminta his wife; which was read
the first time and ordered to lie on the table.

On motion, the question was put, Will the house give leave to bring in a bill to tax bank stock in this state
for certain purposes? The yeas and nays being required, appeared as follow:
