A petition from Jonathan S. Hardesty, of Charles county, praying an act of insolvency, was preferred, read,

and referred to the committee appointed on petitions of a similar nature.

Mr. Perry Spencer, a delegate returned for Talbot county, appeared, and after qualifying in the mode pre-
scribed by the constitution and form of government, and taking an oath to support the constitution of the
United States, took his seat in the house.

A petition from Ignatius Davis, of Frederick county, stating that his grand-father, Meredith Davis, in his
life-time, conveyed to William Matthews and Henry Ballenger, as a place of worship by the people called
Quakers, five acres, part of a tract called Good Luck, in said county, and that the same has since been con-
veyed to the petitioner by several members of said society, and that doubts have arisen as to the legality of the
same, and praying that a law may pass confirming the same, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Kuhn,
Mr. Shaaff and Mr. Hawkins, to consider and report thereon.

A petition from Levin Long, of Worcester county, praying an act of insolvency, was preferred, read, and
referred to the committee appointed on petitions of a similar nature.

A petition from William Gardiner, of Charles county, praying a further time may be allowed him to pay the
balance of a debt due by him to the state, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. M'Pherson, Mr. Hyland
and Mr. Plater, to consider and report thereon.

A petition from Joseph Tilghman, of Worcester county, stating, that himself and his daughter Betsey
Tilghman, are unable to obtain a support for themselves, and praying that a law may pass authorising the levy
court of the county aforesaid to levy a sum of money for that purpose, was preferred, read, and referred to
Mr. Sturgis, Mr. Duer and Mr. Bishop, to consider and report thereon.

A petition from Hezekiah Speake, of Charles county, stating, that he served three years in the continental
army as a soldier, and that there is still clue him the depreciation on his pay, also back rations and cloathing,
and that he is much afflicted with the rheumatism, and praying that his case may be taken into consideration,
and such relief afforded as his situation may appear to ment, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Parnham,
Mr. M'Pherson and Mr. Leigh, to consider and report thereon.

Mr. Montgomery, from the committee, delivers to the speaker a bill, entitled, An act granting leave to the trus-
tees of Bethel congregation, in Harford county, to receive a deed for and hold the land therein mentioned; which
was read the first and second time by especial order and will pass; which was sent to the senate by the clerk.

A petition from Elijah Tare, of Worcester county, praying that some allowance be made for the support of
his daughter, Nancy Tare, a lunatic, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Duer, Mr. Bishop and Mr.
Sturgis, to consider and report thereon.

THE house met. Present the same members as on yesterday. The proceedings of yesterday were read.

A petition from Thomas Nicholls, of Simon, of Montgomery county, stating, that he purchased from the
agent to the state a tract of land in said county, which was to have been laid off at the expence of the state;
that the petitioner had the same surveyed, the fees for which amounted to £. 29 5, which he paid to the sur-
veyor, and praying to be reimbursed for the same, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Watts, Mr. Hall
and Mr. Carroll, to consider and report thereon.

A petition from Elizabeth Crabb, of Montgomery county, stating, that her children, heirs of Jeremiah Crabb,
deceased, hold lands adjoining to the town of Rockville, in the county aforesaid, and that the value of the same
would be greatly enhanced by laying off 10 or 12 acres as an addition to said town, and praying the legislature
to take the same into consideration, was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Watts, Mr. Van-Horn, Mr.
Shaaff, Mr. Selby and Mr. Carroll, to consider and report thereon.

Petitions from John Toadvine and Severn Tarr, of Worcester county, both stating that they are unable to
support themselves, and praying a law may pass, authorising the levy court of the county aforesaid to levy a

sum annually ftor their support, were preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Sturgis, Mr. Duer and Mr. Bishop,

to consider and report thereon.

Mr. M'Pherson, from the committee, delivers to the speaker the following report:

THE committee to whom was referred the petition of William Gardiner, of Charles county, report, that
they have taken the same into consideration, and believe the facts therein stated to be true; they are therefore
of opinion, ns the petitioner has paid into the treasury the sum of five hundred and sixty-two pounds fourteen
shillings and eight-pence, in consequence of his father having been security for Benjamin Cawood, former she-
riff and collector of public taxes for Charles county, who is since insolvent, it would be reasonable and just to
indulge the petitioner for the balance due until the —— day of ——, eighteen hundred and ———; they there-
fore submit the following resolution:

RESOLVED, That all proceedings against William Gardiner, and others, for the recovery of the balance due
by him to the state of Maryland, be and they are hereby suspended until after the ———day of ———, eigh-
