Upon their Oath Present that John Newman Late of ^ the Parish in the said County
of Somerset Planter the third Day of Novr. in ye. Year of our Lord one thousand
Seven hundred and fifty nine at ye. Parish afd. in ye. County afd. did Commit
Fornication with a Certain Rachell Sumners and a Bastard Child on the
Body of her the said Rachell then and there did Beget to the High Displeasure
of Almighty God to the Evil Example of all others in Such Case offending Contr:
:ry to the Peace of the said Lord Propry that now is his good Rule &
government and against the form of the Act of Assembly in Such
Case made and Provided & so forth
Thereupon it was Commanded the Sherriff of Somerset County that he should
take the said Jno. Newman if &c. to answer &c.
And Now to wit at a Court of his Lordship held at Princes Ann Town the third
Tuesday of November Anno Dom. one thousand seven hundred and sixty before
the Justices thereof Came the afd. John Newman in his Proper person
and had a hearing of the Indictment afd. saith that he Cannot deny but that
he is guilty of the Premisses in ye. Indit afd. above upon him Imposed in
Manner & form as by ye. Indit. afd. above agt. him supposed
Whereupon all & singular ye. Premisses being seen and by ye. Court fully
understood it is Considered by the Court here that the afd. John Newman
for the Premisses & offence afd. in the Indt. afd. above specified be taken &c.
Which said John Newman present here in Court as afd. is fined for ye>
Premisses & offence afd. thirty shillings Current money of Maryland which
he paid here in Court to ye use of ye. County &c.
Whereupon the said John Newman is orded to give Sery to save and keep Indemnifd
the Justices of Somerset County Court and their successors from all Troubles burthens
and Charges that might Accrew by means of ye. Birth & Maintainance of ye Child
afd.     Thereupon the said John Newman together with John McGraw
of Somerset County planter his Sery both present here in Court in their
proper persons acknowledged themselves Indebted unto his said Lordship ye.
Right Honrble the Lord Propry in thirty Pounds Current money of Maryland
of their Bodies Goods or Chattles Lands or Tenements Joyntly and severally to be
Made and Levied to the use of the Inhabitants of Somerset County for ye. time being if it happen
that the afd. John Newman his heirs Exrs. or admrs. or any or either of them do not from
time to time and at all times hereafter Acquit Discharge and Save harmless as well ye. Justices
of Somerset County Court for the time being as also the Inhabitants of said County of and
from all Costs Charges & Troubles whatsoever for or by Reason of the Birth maintainance
Nourishing & bringing up of the said Child and of & from all other Suits troubles
& Demands whatsoever touching or Concerning of ye. same &c

His Lordship    Somerset fst the Jurors for his Lordship the Right Honble the Lord
vs    Propry that now is for ye Body of Somerset County upon their
Wm. Caldwell    Oath Present that William Caldwell Late of Stepney Parish in ye
