            THOMAS KING CARROLL, ESQ. GOVERNOR.                                                                                                             1829.

    Section 1.  Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Samuel McClellan, George Keyser, George W.
Williamson, James Blair, McClintock Young, Alcæus B.
Wolf, William Walls, Peter Sauerwein, Junr. George Hothower,
R. B. Simpson, Valentine Dushane, Robert O'Riely, John
R. Piper, John Grubb, John W. Walker, Franklin Rabourg,
D. W. B. McClellan, John Hooper, John H. Dorsey, George
Sauerwein, Levi Bowerson, John Riltney, John Winn, Junr.
Stephen Waters, Alexander Waters, and their successors,
and such other persons as are now, or hereafter may become
members of the same, shall be, and are hereby declared to be
one community, corporation and body politic, forever hereafter,
by the name, style and title of the Howard Fire Company,
and by that name they shall be and are hereby made
able and capable in law to have, purchase, receive, possess,
enjoy and retain to them and their successors, lands, tenements,
rents, annuities or other hereditaments, and the same
to grant, demise, alien or dispose of, in such manner as they
may judge most conducive to the interest of the company;
Provided nevertheless, that the said corporation or body politic
shall not, at any one time, hold or possess property, real,
personal or mixed, exceeding the sum of fifteen hundred dollars
per annum; And provided also, that nothing herein contained
shall be construed to authorise or empower said company,
to carry on any other trade or business, or to do or perform
any act or thing not necessary to the attainment of the object
[to] which the said company is herein declared to be incorporated.
  CHAP. 194.  

Corporate powers
granted.
    Sec. 2.  And be it enacted, That the said company, and
their successors, by the aforesaid name, shall forever hereafter
be able and capable in law to sue and be sued, plead and
be impleaded, answer and be answered, defend and be defended,
in all or any courts of justice whatsoever, and also to
have, make and use, a common seal, and the same to break,
alter and renew at pleasure, and also to assemble and meet at
such times and places as they may agree upon, and also from
time to time to form and adopt such by-laws and regulations,
for the government of said company, and the concerns thereof,
as they may judge necessary and useful, and for the preservation
of the engine of said company, and all the implements
and apparatus belonging thereto, or used therewith, to
regulate the election of officers and members, to enforce
attendance of the members at the meetings of said company,
and observance of the by-laws and regulations thereof, and
for the orderly government of said company, the same not being
contrary to the laws of this state, or of the United States,
and generally to do and execute all such acts, matters and
things as to them shall or may appear necessary and proper,
for the purpose aforesaid.
