CHAP. XIV.
An Act to regulate the appointment, and enlarge the
powers, of the Levy Court, and to abolish the Office of
Commissioners of the Tax, in Queen-Anne's county.

Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Ma-
ryland, That the office of commissioners of the tax in
Queen-Anne's county is hereby abolished: and that all the
powers, duties, property and papers, belonging to said com-
missioners, in their official capacity, shall be transferred to
the levy court of said county.

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That the said levy court shall
consist of five members, one to be selected from each of the
five election districts as now laid off in said county, to be
appointed by the governor and council, and to be entitled
to the compensation already provided by law.

Sec. 3. And be it enacted, That the said levy court shall
appoint a well qualified person, a resident of said county,
who shall not at the same time hold the office of county clerk,
to act and serve as clerk to the said levy court, and to dis-
charge all the duties which have heretofore severally be-
longed to the clerk of the levy court and to the clerk of the
commissioners of the tax; and the person so appointed shall,
previously to his entering upon the duties of his office, exe-
cute a bond to the state of Maryland, to be approver by the
said levy court, in thn penalty of one thousand dollars, for
the true and faithful performance of the duties hereby im-
posed; which bond shall be recorded in the clerk's office of
said county, an office copy of which bond, under seal, shall
be evidence in any court of law or equity in this state; and
shall subscribe the" following oath, or affirmation, as the case
may be: I, ———— ———— , do swear, or affirm, that as
clerk to the levy court of Queen-Anne's county, I will ho-
nestly and faithfully, to the best of my skill and judgment,
execute the duties of said office without favour, affection or
prejudice, so help me God; which oath, or affirmation, is to
be administered by one of the judges of said court.

His compensation
|
Sec. 4. And be it enacted, That the said clerk shall re-
ceive two dollars for every day he shall attend the session of
the said court; and such further compensation for official du-
ties performed on other days, as may be allowed by said
court, not exceeding the rate of one hundred dollars per
annum, for such extra service, and shall be removable at
the discretion of said court.

Sec. 5. And be it enacted, That upon the appointment
of said clerk, the clerk of the county court in Queen-Anne's
county shall deliver to the said clerk, when directed by the
said levy court, all the books, accounts and papers, belong-
ing and appertaining to the said levy court, and shall fur-
nish the said levy court with copies of such lists, accounts
and papers, as may be at any time required by said levy
