terto be acquired by them as aforesaid, have all the rights of
citizens of this state, free and exempt from the operation of
the escheat laws, so that they may hold and enjoy, sell, lease
or bequeath, such lands as maybe advisable or necessary.

CHAP. 179.

CHAP: CLXXX.

An Additional Supplement to an act, entitled, An act
to incorporate a Company for the purpose of making
and cutting a Canal between the River Delaware and
the Chesapeake Bay.

Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Ma-
ryland, That it shall and may be lawful for the president
and directors of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal Com-
pany, from time to time, to make and enact rules and regu-
lations for the good government of the said canal, and the har-
bours, basins, and other appertenances thereof, and for pro-
tecting the same from injury, and for promoting the gene-
ral security and convenience of the vessels which may na-
vigate the same; and that it shall and may be lawful for the
said president and directors to require and enforce, by their
officers and agents, due conformity to such rules and regu-
lations.

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That if any person shall ob-
struct the navigation of the said canal, its basins, harbours,
or other appertenances, or shall otherwise injure, deface,
or destroy, any of the banks, locks, bridges or other ap-
pertenances thereof, or shall break any of the rules and re-
gulations adopted by the said president and directors for the
good government of the said canal, he shall be liable to an
action by the said Chesapeake and Delaware Canal Compa-
ny, or by any other persons aggrieved, for the damages
which they may sustain.

Sec. 3. And be it enacted, That for securing the more
convenient and safe navigation of Broad and Back Creeks,
into which the said canal enters, it shall and may be lawful
for the said president and directors to enact from time to
time, such rules and regulations for the government of ves-
sels navigating the same, as may by them be judged neces-
sary and proper for the purposes aforesaid, and to enforce
conformity thereto in the manner hereinbefore specified.

Sec. 4. And whereas, it has been represented to this ge-
neral assembly that it will hereafter be required, in order to
the more convenient approach to the said canal, that Broad
and Back Creeks should be deepened, and the channels
thereof be made wider and more direct by artificial means,
and that injury may be done to the said canal company by
permitting encroachments upon the said creeks, therefore,
