viving trustees to whom was conveyed a part of a lot of
ground in the town of Liberty, for the erection of a mar-
ket-house, be and they are hereby authorised and empow-
ered to convey and transfer said part of a lot of ground in
said town, to Thomas Warfield, Christopher Owings, Dr.
Richard Dorsey, Abraham Jones, Abelard Stevenson, Ab-
clel Unkeefer Elihu H. Rockwell, James Reed and Daniel
Yandis, to them, their heirs and assigns, in trust, for the
purpose of erecting a house of public worship, and for no
other purpose whatever.

CHAP. 159.

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That the aforesaid trustees,
or a majority of them, shall have power to fill any vacan-
cy which may take place in their body, from death, resig-
nation, or refusal to serve, by ballot, or otherwise, as they
may think best.

An Act to Incorporate the Trustees of the Maria Mar-
thian Society of Baltimore.

Passed Mar 11, 1829

WHEREAS Mrs. Mary J. J. Willinmson, Mrs. Ann Susan
Tierman, Mrs. Eliza Scott, Mrs. Cornelia Howard, Mrs.
Jane Chatard, Mrs. Sophia Read, Mrs. Maria Louisa Stew-
art, and other respectable ladies in the city of Baltimore,
have associated by the name of The Maria Mar thian Society,
for the purpose of rendering charitable aid, as far as may be
in their power, to such deserving, distressed persons as shall
be suffering from sickness or poverty; and the better to en-
able them to obtain the means to effect their humane object,
have prayed that trustees of the said society may be incor-
porated, with power to receive, hold and dispose of, contri-
butions, donations, gifts, grants and devises, of all kinds of
property, estate and effects, to a limited amount, in trust for
the purposes aforesaid; therefore,

Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
Williamson, John Chatard, Richard S. Stewart, and William
George Read, and their successors in office elected in the
manner hereinafter provided, shall be and they are hereby
incorporated and made a body politic by the name of The
Trustees of The Maria Marthian Society of Baltimore, and
by that name shall have continued succession, and be capa-
ble in law of receiving and holding in trust, and of using
and disposing of, as is hereinafter provided, all kinds of
gifts, grants, conveyances, donations and devises of estates,
real, personal and mixed, property and effects, not ex-
