aitting as judges of registration or election and as clerks of
election respectively, shall be allowed and paid five dollars
($5.00) a day; fractions of a day shall be allowed and paid
at the rate of fifty cents an hour; and in all other respects
Section 118 of Article 33 of the Annotated Code of Public
General Laws of Maryland, title "Elections," sub-title "Com-
pensation, '' shall remain in full force and effect in Frederick,
Calvert and St. Mary's Counties; provided the increased com-
pensation allowed for by this Act shall continue from June
1, 1920, to June 1, 1922, and no longer.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this Act shall take effect
from the first day of June, 1920.

CHAPTER 355.

AN ACT to authorize, empower and direct the Mayor and
Council of the Town of Somerset, in Montgomery County,
to construct, build and maintain certain streets and high-
ways within said Town and \evy a special tax upon the
abutting property owners to pay for same, and to issue
certificates of indebtedness therefor.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That the Mayor and Council of the Town of Somerset,
in the County of Montgomery, are hereby authorized, em-
powered and directed at any time and of their own volition,
and without petition being filed, to open, alter, improve, locate,
re-locate or close any public highway, avenue, street, lane or
alley, provide necessary drainage for any public highway,
avenue, street lane or alley within said Town of Somerset
whenever it shall be necessary, in the opinion of said Mayor
and Council, in, on or upon any of the public highways, ave-
nues, streets, lanes or alleys, and the entire cost of same shall
be assessed against the property abutting said public high-
way, avenue, street, lane or alley, and the money due from
said assessment shall be a lien on said abutting property and
collected as other taxes are collected by the Mayor and Coun-
cil of the Town of Somerset.

SEC. 2. Be it further enacted. That the Mayor and Coun-
cil are hereby given power and authority in addition to such
power and authority as are now possessed by said Town to
