provision for pensioning the widow and infant children of
firemen who have been killed in the active discharge of their
duties as .members of the Fire Department of Baltimore
County as in the judgment of such Commissioners shall be
just and proper.

CHAPTER 164.

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact with amendments Sections
437 and 438 of Offutt's Code of the Public Local Laws of
Baltimore County published in 1916 and to add eight
new sections to said code, to be known as Sections 438A,
438B, 438C, 438D, 438E, 438F, 438G and 438H, so as to
provide for the Appointment, retirement, compensation
and pensioning of members of the Police Force of Balti-
more County.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Sections 437 and 438 of Offutt's Code of the Pub-
lic Local Laws of Baltimore County published in 1916 be and
the same are hereby repealed and re-enacted with amendments
so as to read as follows; that is to say:

SECTION 437. That all appointments hereafter made to the
Police Force of Baltimore County shall be made from the
qualified voters thereof and all applications for appointments
shall be made upon printed blanks to be furnished free of
charge by the County Commissioners, wherein the applicant
shall set forth in his own handwriting his full name and age,
the place and State of his birth, his occupation for two years
preceding his application and. such other information as the
Commissioners may require touching the merits and fitness of
the applicant for the position for which he applies; such ap-
plication shall be signed by the applicant, with his affidavit
that the facts herein set forth are true to the best of his knowl-
edge and belief, and shall contain blanks to be filled in by
four reputable citizens of said county, certifying that1 the
applicant is known to them, for not less than one year and in
character and habits, to the best of their knowledge and be-
lief, is in all respects fit for the service which he wishes to
enter; provided that no person shall be appointed on the
