28 ~ [14 September 1692] Petition of negro William Philips for his freedom John Harris this day brought a Nigro man into Court which Nigro told the Court that his name was Wm. Philips and that he had served Maj. Beverley. Sd Nigro likewise said that he was a piece (apprentice?) of a carpenter and that his Godfather Gilbert Jenckins freed him from sd Beverley which sd Gilbert lived in James City (County in VA). He likewise told the Court that he came over in April past in Co’ll Custiss sloop & further said Co’ll Custiss knew him to be a freeman. The said Nigro told the Court the last place he was at work was at Thomas Midletons. Ordered by the Court the above sd Nigro be taken into the Sheriffs custody till security be given that he is a freeman or pending certificate of Co’ll Custiss directed to some Magistrate here that he is a freeman.
