109 ~  Court convenes for 9 November 1692; Commissioners present: Francis Jenckins, James Dashiels, Samuel Hopkins, Edmund Howard, Capt. John King.

 

108 ~  Edward Wale brings servant Anthony Jones before Court; judged to be 10 years on 15 January next; apprenticed to Wale until age 21.

 

108 ~  Account of bill for £11/14/0 against estate of Thomas Proffit, submitted by William Turvile.

 

110 ~  Cornelius Anderson fined for cursing and swearing; Henry Philips security.

 

111 ~  Petition of Miles Gray against his servant Anthony Machado (Mechane, Machade), alias Asher, Portugese, for running away and causing other expenses amounting to 1394 lbs/tbco; Gray presents apprentice agreement between Anthony Machado and Arthur Mason - Anthony Machado from Island of Torsara(?), per consent of George Hooper, mariner, who brought him to Boston, “to be the occupation of biskett maker”, to serve for 8 years; signed over to Joseph Thaxter of Virginia on 1 June 1687, and afterwards to Miles Gray on 22 June 1687; Court finds for Gray and assesses two years on Machado, one for expense of 1394 lbs/tbco and other for running away; Gray will reduce to one year if Machado give good service.

 

112 ~  Case against Richard Varden and Richard Tull for “misdemeanors”; Varden makes bond for £10, security John Barber; Tull makes bond for £10, security Adam Heatch.

 

113 ~  Edward Fowler requests to continue as ferryman at Wicomico for ensuing year; granted.

 

113 ~  William Bradshaw petition to continue as ferryman at Pocomoke for ensuing year; granted; requests additional funds for expense of constructing causeway through swamp; no decision recorded.

 

114 ~  Mary Bradshaw ordered to appear on following day to answer complaint of Edward Jones.

 

114 ~  Case against Mary McMillion; told to post security to appear in January Court; makes bond for £10, security John Rowell.

 

114 ~  Order for Council of Grand Inquest to write petition and send to Governor Copley.

 

115 ~  Petition written by Council of Grand Inquest to Governor; no signatories; complains that his new appointees, Ranger Edward Green and Surveyor Joshua Barkstead, are from outside the county and their commissions may have been “surreptitiously obtained & his Excell’ie not duly informed”; suggest that their commissions “lye dormant till his Exce’llie may have fuller information”. 115 ~  Letter to Governor Copley from Somerset Commissioners transmitting and endorsing the foregoing petition; accuses Barkstead and Green of misdemeanors and exceeding their authority, specifically for laying out lands for themselves over existing patented lands and offering same for sale; suggests that the Governor appoint replacements; signed “per order, John West, Clerk”. (See Transcriptions. Note: Barkstead was sworn in as Surveyor in June Court; see f. 227)

 

116 ~  Specification of address to be used for transmittal of petition and letter: “To his Excell’ie Lionel Copley, Esq, Capt. Gen’ll & Govern’r of Maryland”.

116 ~  Case against Cornelius Innis for fornication with Elizabeth Wildgoose, spinster, and fathering a bastard; pleads not guilty; James Sangster, clerk of Indictments; Wildgoose makes oath that Innis is “the only father of her late bastard child”.

 

117 ~  Cornelius Innis makes bond of £20 for his good behavior; securities John Franklin and William Tomkins.

 

117 ~  Case against John Cary, laborer, for killing 7 wild unmarked shoats belonging to Francis Jenckins, valued at 700 lbs/pork; pleads not guilty; Jury called by Sheriff: William Piper (Pyper), Daniel Hast, William Harris, Matthew Wallis, Samuel Jones, Teague Quillaine, John Jenner, Henry Phillips, Gydeon Tillman, Thomas Willis, David Griffis, Nicholas Evins; evidences: William Browne, William Layton and Thomas Horseman.

 

117 ~  Jury returns verdict againt Cary for 150 lbs/pork to be paid fourfold; William Piper foreman of Jury; Cary makes bond for £30, securities Samuel Jones & Thomas Cary.

 

118 ~  Order for William Layton and William Burch to post bond for appearance in January Court; Layton makes bond for £20, security Joseph Venables; Burch for £20, security Cornelius Anderson.

 

119 ~  Case against Edmund McDonnell, planter, for fornication with Jone Farlow, spinster, and fathering a bastard; pleads not guilty; Farlow makes oath that McDonnell is the father; McDonnell required to make bond for £20 for his good behavior and fined 25 days work, diet and tools for himself and 25 days for Jone Farlow; both are put in Sheriff’s custody until they give security.

 

120 ~  Jone Farlow makes bond for £10; security Robert Smith.

 

120 ~  John Dorman, merchant, Pltf. vs. John Freeman, Deft. for defrauding Dorman of a hogshead of tobacco, 406 pounds, taken from his receiver William Cord of Mattapony; Freeman, ordered to pay, with costs.
