9 ~ [14 August 1695] Case against Thomas Powell, Constable of Bogatee Norten, for contempt Their Ma’ties agst. Thomas Powell Constable of BaogateeNorten ~~ The sd Thomas Powell was this day ordered into the Sheriffs Custody for his contempt & neglect, viz, not obeying & fulfilling the late ord’r of Governor & Councel concerning acc’t of hoggs & catle to be taken with list of tythables as also not going to the extent of his hundred p/ order of this Court. Likewise the sd Thomas desired of your Wor’ll Court that he might appear before the Courts cetters(?) to be heard saying in contempt thereof, that in Accamack it used to be otherwise but now wee must dance after Marylands fidle. Still obstinately & audaciously refusing to give any further acc’t of the List of Taxable p’sons in his hundred or of any hoggs or catle as afsd which the Court told him he ought to have complyed with at his peril, but he replyed it should be at the Courts peril, further saying that when he was at Cedar Neck he saw the Constable of the Whorekill there, who had the Kings broad Seal & Crowne of England, & beng askt if he knew the sd broad seal who replyed, yes, he knew it well enough. Ordered that the sd Thomas Powell be kept in safe custody & transmitted over to the next Provinciall Court to answer the premises before the Governor & Councel & that the totall proceedings hereof likewise be transmitted. ~~~ ~~~ ~~~ |
