AUGUST COURT 1695 5 ~ 13 August 1695; Court convenes; Commissioners present: Francis Jenckins, Thomas Dixon, Samuel Hopkins, James Round, George Layfield, John King, Stephen Horsey, Arnold Elzey 5 ~ Case against John Upshott for cohabitation; Upshott produces certificate of matrimony with Mary Thomas, dated 19 July 1695, in rites of the Church of England in Virginia, signed by Thomas Teackle; Court orders he post security; Upshott makes bond of £50 for his good behavior, especially to John Thomas; securities John & James Henderson. 5 ~ Case against Rose Mason; £10 bond on Thomas Quillain for appearance of Rose Mason at Court, date not specified; no action by court. 5 ~ John Fisher sworn as Deputy Clerk of Court. 5 ~ Order from Henry Denton (Clerk of Provincial Council) dated 28 May 1695 presented by William Whittington; directs respective counties to finish all pending cases by August Court. 6 ~ Court adjourns briefly; reconvenes with Commissioner John Bozman joining. 6 ~ Constables ordered to bring in all non-residents to give security for their taxes. 6 ~ Sheriff ordered to take John Broughton into custody for contempt & swearing; per John Bozman 6 ~ Capt. John King and Court Clerk ordered to search the registers for concealed tythables and make report; Court adjourns for the day. |
