and of said town Clerk, Treasurer and Collector, and give a
true report of the same to the best of his ability, and for his
services he shall receive such sum, not exceeding One Hundred
Dollars ($100. 00), as the said Mayor and Council may fix.
He shall report in writing to the Mayor and Council the result
of his examination, as soon after he has made the same as may
be practicable.
Police Justice.
SEC. 9. The Police Justice of the town of Brunswick who
shall also be the Justice of the Peace of Election District No.
25 in Frederick County and who shall reside at Brunswick,
or the Mayor of said Town, in the absence, sickness or other
disability of said Police Justice shall hold his court in the
municipal building for the purpose of preserving the peace of
said town and for other Municipal purposes, shall have full
power and authority to hear, determine and pass sentence in
all cases for violations of any ordinance of said town and may
impose fines for such violations, and in default of the payment
of such fines and the costs of prosecution, may imprison the
offender in the town lockup or county jail, but not exceeding
one day for every dollar of fine imposed and not exceeding
sixty days in all; and for the purpose of carrying out the
police powers herein granted, the person, before whom any
case for the violation of an ordinance of said town shall be
tried as aforesaid, shall have the power to issue warrants com-
manding the chief bailiff of said corporation, or any deputy
bailiff thereof, to arrest any person charged with violating
any of the ordinances of said town and have the offenders
brought before him for trial; he shall have the power to sum-
mon witnesses and to enforce their attendance, both for the
Corporation and the accused, by attachment as in like cases
before Justices of the Peace. But in all cases where a person
is convicted of violating any ordinance of said town, and fined
in excess of five dollars, he shall have the right of appeal to
the Circuit Court for Frederick County; provided, the person
appealing shall pray the appeal forthwith, and shall give good
and sufficient bond, to be approved by the Police Justice,
Mayor or other person trying the case for the payment of the
fine imposed and all costs incurred in the prosecution and the
appeal, in case the conviction shall be sustained in the Circuit
Court aforesaid. But no appeal shall stay process or execu-
tion upon the judgment unless a bond be given as above pro-
