shall be a duly and regularly admitted attorney at law, shall
not be held to permit or allow any such corporation or volun-
tary association to do the acts prohibited herein. Nor shall
such facts be a defense upon a trial of any of the persons men-
tioned herein for a violation of the provisions of this section.
This section shall not apply to the business of examining and
insuring titles to real property, or the collection or adjustment
of mercantile claims in which a corporation or voluntary as-
sociation may be lawfully engaged, nor to any insurance cor-
poration or association defending the insured under a policy of
insurance.

CHAPTER 696.

AN ACT to incorporate The Cambridge and Blackwater Canal

Company.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Albanus Phillips, Levi B. Phillips, W. Grason Win-
terbottom, T. Sangston Insley, Robert H. Matthews, Earle W.
Orem, George W. Woolford, W. Hamilton Spedden, Edward S.
Phillips, P. Watson Webb, Vernon S. Bradley, William H. Med-
ford, J. Lockwood Shepherd, Edgar B. Simmons and William
E. Hearn, of Dorchester County, State of Maryland, and their
successors and assigns be, and they are hereby created a body
corporate under the name of The Cambridge and Blackwater
Canal Company, and by that name shall have perpetual suc-
cession.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the said Company, under
the above name, shall be capable in law to sue and be sued, to
plead and be impleaded, and to answer and to be answered in
any Court of law or equity; to make and use a common seal
and to alter the same at pleasure; and shall have the right and
power to construct, own and operate a canal in Dorchester
County, Maryland, connecting the headwaters of the Little
Blackwater River with the headwaters of Cambridge Creek, so
as to connect the navigable waters of the Little Blackwater
River with the navigable waters of the Great Choptank River
through Cambridge Creek; and to regulate, levy and collect
tolls or charges for the use of said canal; and to own, use and
operate vessels, barges, and other appliances in, through, or in
