1524 LAWS OK MARYLAND. [CH. 680

491. The county commissioners may, in their discretion,
appoint a keeper of the standards of weights and measures,
who shall take possession thereof, and perform all the duties
herein required to be performed by their clerk, and shall be
entitled to the same compensation therefor, and shall give
bond to the commissioners in the penal sum of five hundred
dollars, conditioned for the safekeeping of said standards of
weights and measures, and the performance of the duties of
his office.

492. If any person in said county shall sell by any weights
or measures too light or small, he shall, upon conviction in the
Circuit Court for the County, be liable to a penalty of twenty-
five dollars for each offense.

WILD FOWL.

493. It shall not be lawful for any person to whip or beat
the waters of Romney creek with poles, sticks or any other
thing for the purpose of driving or frightening wild ducks or
water fowl of any description from their feeding or roosting
grounds in said creek, nor to do the same or any other acts
which will have that effect.

494. If any person shall violate any of the provisions of
the preceding section, he shall, for every such offense, upon
conviction before a justice of the peace of said county, be fined
a sum not less than ten dollars nor more than thirty dollars,
one-half of said fine to be given to the informer and the other
half to be paid over to the school commissioners of said county
for school purposes.

495. In the event of the failure or refusal of any person
so convicted to pay such fine, the justice of the peace impos-
ing the fine shall commit him to the county jail for not less
than thirty nor more than sixty days.

496. It shall not be lawful for any person to lash or beat
the waters within the limits of Harford County, or which
wash the shores of said county, with rods, poles, sticks or
other instruments, or to. make noises on the deck of any boat,
or on any part of any boat, by the use of clogs or wooden
shoes, or by any other instrument or means, for the purpose,
or which will have the effect of driving or frightening wild
ducks or water fowl of any description from their feeding or
roosting grounds in said waters, or to shoot at or do anything
whatever with such intent and for such purpose.
