1338 LAWS OF MARYLAND. [CH. 653

SEC. 868. The Criminal Court of Baltimore shall have con-
current original jurisdiction with the several station house jus-
tices to hear, try and sentence every person convicted of violat-
ing any of the provisions of the above sections 865 and 866.

SEC. 869. The said court or said justice before whom any per-
son so charged may be brought, upon proof that such person
has violated any of the provisions of the above Sections 865 or
866, shall in his discretion, fine such person not exceeding the
sum of five hundred dollars or sentence such person, to be con-
fined in jail or in the house of correction or in such other suit-
able place as may hereafter be provided by the Mayor and City
Council of Baltimore for a period not exceeding one year; pro-
vided that any person found to be a pauper or an habitual beg-
gar who may not be ablebodied, but aged, or seriously crippled
or infirm may in the discretion of said court or justice be com-
mitted to the almshouse of said city; and provided further that
any minor convicted under the provisions of the above Sections
865 or 866 may be sent to any reformatory institution to which
minors may be committed under Article 27 of the Code of Public
General Laws of Maryland.

SEC. 870. Whenever any workhouse or other place shall be
provided by the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore to which
persons convicted of violating any of the provisions of the above
Sections 865 or 866 may be sent, the said court or justice may
send them to such workhouse or other place if the said court or
justice consider it a more suitable place for the purpose.

SEC. 871. The Supervisors of City Charities or the officers of
places respectively to which persons convicted of violating any
of the provisions of the above sections 865 or 866 may be sent
shall keep them during the time for which they may be com-
mitted so that they cannot escape from said places.

SEC. 872. The said Supervisors of City Charities or other
officers respectively shall put such of said persons so convicted
as are able to work to the work which they are best able to do.

SEC. 873. The trustees of the almshouse or officers of the
other places respectively to which persons convicted of violating
any of the provisions of the above sections 865 or 866 may now
or hereafter be sent shall have the right to make all proper
rules and regulations for the purpose of carrying out the afore-
said provisions.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take
effect from and after the first day of June, 1916.
