SEC. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take
effect from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 570.
AN ACT. to add a new Section to Article 12 of the Code of Public
Local Laws of Maryland, title "Garrett County," sub-title
"Sheriff," to be known as Section 215-AA of said Article 12,
directing and authorizing the sheriff of Garrett County to re-
quire all persons of sufficient ability sentenced to imprison-
ment in the county jail of said Garrett County, in punishment
of any crime or misdemeanor committed in said county, by the
Circuit Court or Justice of the Peace of said county, to work
on the public roads and highways of said county, or public
streets of any incorporated town in said county, or to do some
work in connection with the improvement thereof, as part of
the prison discipline and management.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That a new Section be and the same is hereby added to the
Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland, title '' Garrett County,''
sub-title "Sheriff," to be known as Section 215-AA of Article
12 of said Code and to read as follows:
SECTION 215-AA. The sheriff of Garrett County is hereby
authorized and directed to require all persons of sufficient abil-
ity who shall be sentenced to imprisonment in the county jail
of said Garrett County by the. Circuit Court of Garrett County
or any Justice of the Peace of said county, as a punishment for
any crime or misdemeanor, committed therein, to work upon the
public roads and highways of said county, or upon the public
streets of any incorporated town of said county, or to do some
work in connection with the improvement thereof, as part of
the prison discipline and management, provided, nothing herein
shall apply to persons convicted and sentenced for crimes or
misdemeanors committed prior to the passage of this Act, or to
prisoners sentenced to perform such work on said roads or
streets.
SEC, 2. And be it enacted, That this Act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.
