grees W. 476 feet to a locust tree; thence S. 3 degrees W. 750
to the corner of Footen's stable; thence S. 25 1/2 degrees W.
494 feet to an oak tree; thence S. 17 degrees E. 1000 feet to &
post near Potomac dump; thence S. 78 degrees E. 775 feet to
the beginning at the cucumber tree, and the property, within
the said lines will be subject to such taxes and such charges as
may be deemed necessary by the said Commissioners, or a ma-
jority of them, to support and maintain the expense which may
at any time be incurred in the government and improvement
of said town.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the male citizens of the
town of Barton aforesaid of the age of twenty-one years and
upwards, who being citizens of the United States have resided
in said town for and during a period of six months next pre-
ceding the first Monday in May in each and every year, at the
usual place of holding elections in said town, or at such place
as may be designated by the Commissioners of Barton, are au-
thorized to elect five Commissioners for said town who shall be
owners of real estate and regular taxpayers in said town, and
who have resided within said town for a period of at least one
year preceding said election; also one Clerk and one Bailiff,
each of whom shall have resided in said town for a period of at
least one year preceding their election.

The Commissioners elected under this Act shall serve for one
and two years respectively, or until their successors are elected
and qualified, and it is herein provided that the two Commis-
sioners receiving the highest number of votes at the first or
second election, shall serve for two years, and the three re-
ceiving the next highest shall be elected for one year, and at
each election thereafter, three Commissioners shall be elected,
and the two receiving the highest number of votes shall be
elected for two years, and the one receiving the next highest
number of votes shall be elected for one year. The Clerk and
the Bailiff to be elected under the provisions of this Act, shall,
after they have qualified, hold their respective offices for the
period of one year, or until their successors are elected and
qualified.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That the Commissioners, the
Clerk and the Bailiff elected under the provisions of this Act
shall qualify on the fourth Monday in May in each year by
taking the following oath to be administered by some Justice
of the Peace: I................. do swear (or affirm) that I
