PHILLIPS LEE GOLDSBOROUGH, GOVERNOR. 221

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That the Board of County School Commissioners of any
County in the State, may, in its discretion, appoint one or more
school physicians and assign one to any public school within
the limits of such County, and shall provide such school phy-
sicians, when so appointed, with proper facilities for the per-
formance of their duties, as hereinafter provided.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That school physicians appointed
as outlined in Section 1, shall be physicians legally qualified to
practice medicine in this State who have had at least two years
experience in the practice of their profession.

SEC. 3. And b,e it enacted, That every school physician so
appointed shall make a prompt examination of all children re-
ferred to him, as hereinafter provided, and such further exami-
nation of teachers, janitors, and school buildings, as in his opin-
ion the protection of the health of the pupils may require. He
shall return promptly to the authorities appointing him, on
blanks furnished as hereinafter provided, the results of his
examinations.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That the superintendent, princi-
pal or teacher of any school to which a school physician has been
assigned, as hereinafter provided, shall refer to such physician
every child returning to school without a permit from the health
officer or Board of Health, after absence on account of illness
or from unknown cause, and every child attending such school,
who appears to be in ill health, or is suspected to be sick with
any contagious or infectious disease, unless such child is imme-
diately excluded from school, under the provisions of the gen-
eral statutes or the sanitary regulations in force in said town
or district; provided, that in the case of schools in remote and
isolated locations the school authorities may make such other
arrangements as may be advisable to carry out the purposes of
this Act.

SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That the Board of County School
Commissioners of any County, which has appointed one or more
school physicians, in accordance with the provisions of this Act,
shall cause every child attending the public schools therein to
be separately and carefully tested and examined at least once
in every two years to ascertain whether such child is suffering
with defective sight or hearing, or from any other physical dis-
ability tending to prevent such child from receiving the full
benefit of school work, or requiring a modification of such school
