said slave or slaves shall be one hundred dollars,
or one-half part of the market value in the State
of Maryland of such slave or slaves so taken and
returned to his, her or their lawful owner, his, her
or their agent, trustee or guardian, at the choice
or option of said owner, agent, trustee or guardian
of such slave or slaves.

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall
take effect from, and after its passage.

CHAPTER 23.

AN ACT to appropriate a sum of money for the
redemption and repayment of unused Stamps,
and to authorize the Comptroller to redeem the
same.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That the sum of one thousand dol-
lars, or so much thereof as may be found necessa-
ry, be and the same is hereby appropriated for the
re-payment of all monies which have been paid
into the Treasury, under th« act of March tenth,
eighteen hundred and forty-five, entitled, An act
imposing duties on promissory notes, bills of ex-
change, specialties and other instruments of wri-
ting, to aid in paying the debts of the State, for
stamped paper or papers, which shall appear from
evidence, satisfactory to the Comptroller, not to
have been used within the meaning and intent oi
said act.

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That the Treasurer
shall redeem all paper or papers issued under said
act, which shall be presented to him for redemp-
tion prior to the thirtieth day of September, eigh-
teen hundred and sixty-three, properly certified by
the Comptroller ; Provided, he does not exceed the
amount appropriated for that purpose in section
first of this act.
