AN ACT to add a new Article to the Code of
Public General Laws under the title of "Mili-
tary Agencies."

SECTION. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assem-
bly of Maryland, That the following Article be
added to the Code of Public General Laws, under
the title of "Military Agencies." The Governor
is hereby authorized to appoint an agent or agents,
whose duty it shall be to look after the in-
terests of the Maryland Volunteers in the service
of the United States, to visit the troops in the field
and elsewhere, and especially to discharge such
duties relating to the welfare of the sick, wound-
ed and disabled soldiers of this State, as the Gov-
ernor may from time to time prescribe and direct.
The Governor may at any time remove any agent
appointed under the provisions of this act, and fill
the vacancy thus occasioned. The sum of ten
thousand dollars is hereby appropriated to defray
the expenses arising under this act, and the Gover-
nor is hereby authorized to expend the whole or any
part thereof in any manner which in his judgment

may be best calculated to promote the object here-
herein contemplated; provided however, that the
amount of such expenditures, shall not exceed the
sum of five thousand dollars in any one year.
The Governor shall pay such agent or agents, his,
her or their traveling expenses, and such compensa-
tion as in his judgment may be reasonable and just.
It shall be the duty of said agent or agents to re-
port to the Governor at least once in every three
months the condition of Maryland troops in the
service of the United States, and their wants, and
to make such recommendations as to them may
seem proper. The said agent or agents shall, prior
or to the next meeting of the General Assembly
make a full and complete report to the Governor,
of all their proceedings under this act, embracing
a financial statement and exhibit of all moneys
received and disbursed by them, which report
shall be laid before the Legislature by the Gov-
ernor.
