CHAPTER 140.

 

AN ACT to incorporate " The Elkton Gaslight
Company," at Elkton, Cecil county, Maryland.

7, 1864.

WHEREAS, John W. Baker and Lucius U. Malt-
by, under the name and firm of J. W. Baker &
Co., have erected and completed at their own ex-
pense in the town of Elkton, suitable gas works,
for the manufacture of illuminating coal gas for
the lighting of said town, and which are at this
time in successful operation; and whereas, they
desire to offer an opportunity to the citizens of said
town and vicinity, to become part owners and
stockholders in said gas works, and for that pur-
pose propose to organize and have incorporated a
joint stock company, under the name and title of
the Elkton Gas Light Company.

Preamble.

SECTION 1 . Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That John W. Baker, Lucius U.
Maltby, James T. McCullough, William Torbert,
Francis A. Ellis, William J. Jones, James Gra-
ham and Samuel B. Foard, and all such persons
as shall associate with them by becoming stock-
holders, in the manner hereinafter provided, their
successors and assigns, shall be and are hereby
made and constituted a body politic and corporate,
by the name, style and title of the Elkton Gas
Light Company, and shall have continual succes-
sion, and shall be capable in law to sue and be
sued, to plead and be impleaded, to apswer and be
answered, in auy court of law or equity, and to
make, have and use a commod seal, and to change
or alter the same at pleasure, and to do and per-
form all such acts generally, and make all such
contracts and agreements, and to purchase, hold,
lease and use, such lands, tenements, heredita-
