CHAPTER 132.

Passed Feb.
25, 1864.

AN ACT to add to the fourth Article of the Code
of Public Local Laws the following section em-
powering the Mayor and City Council of Balti-
more to raise money and appropriate the game
for the relief of the families of those who enlisted
under the call of the War Department, or of
those who may hereafter enlist as a part of the
quota of the city of Baltimore.

Appropria-
tion for relief.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That the Mayor and City Council
of Baltimore be aud they are hereby authorized
and empowered to raise and appropriate, in their
discretion, in such manner and at such times as
they may deem best, such sums of money as they
may deem necessary to provide for the relief of the
families of thos,e who are, have been, or may here-
after be in the military service of the United State
either by enlistment or draft, as a part of the qouta

of the city of Baltimore; provided, that the amount
so raised shall not exceed the sum of three hun-
dred thousand dollars in any one year.

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That the Mayor and
City Council of Baltimore may create a sinking
fund to meet the liabilities to be incurred under
the first section of this act, and may also levy upon
the assessable property of the city of Baltimore,
from time to time, such sum or sums as may be
necessary to provide therefor, and for the payment
of the principal and interest of the liabilities to be
incurred under this act, and may pass all ordi-
nances necessary to carry out the purposes of the
same.

In force.

Sec. 3. And be it enacted, That this act shall
take effect from and after the date of its passage.
