REV. DR. W. SAMPSON BROOKS.

The above is a cut of the Rev. Dr. W. Sampson Brooks, the dis-
tinguished pastor of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church,
Baltimore. Dr. Brooks came to this struggling church in the
spring of 1917 and immediately set to work to bring it out of the
mire into which it had fallen, largely because of its great debt.
By his kindly manner, dignified bearing and wonderful knowledge
of human nature, coupled with pulpit eloquence seldom equalled,
he has so endeared himself to the people of Baltimore that he has
won the whole-hearted support of ministers and laymen of all de-
nominations for the cause he is in this city to represent. During
his first year at Bethel he has succeeded in raising upwards of
$30,000, and has had his Sunday services attended by the largest
crowds in the history of the church.
